Sri Lanka receives Safe Travels Stamp from World Travel & Tourism Council.

Recognising the safety protocols introduced by the Government of Sri Lanka along with standards mandated by SLTDA to ensure the safety of domestic and international travellers, destination Sri Lanka was recently endowed with the World Travel and Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Safe Travels stamp along with 16 other countries.

Whilst establishing confidence among tourists looking at the island paradise as a preferred destination to travel amidst the pandemic, the Safe Travels stamp will also allow them to recognise properties and businesses that diligently follow globally streamed health and hygiene protocols aligned with the WTTC’s Safe Travels Protocols.

The WTTC’s Safe Travels stamp is the first of its kind, specifically designed to combat the ramifications of Covid-19 and similar outbreaks. Recognised and embraced by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the stamp allows travellers to trot the globe whilst ensuring their safety.

Sri Lanka joins the ranks of leading destinations to be stamped safe, including Indonesia, Dubai, Tanzania, Portugal, Mexican Caribbean, Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Turkey, Bulgaria, Jamaica, Mauritius, Ontario, Saudi Arabia, Rwanda and counting, having had its protocols validated by WTTC to be in line with those devised by the global organization.

Traditional Sri Lankan Cuisine - 1
Kiribath with lunu miris
Kiribath is a special type of rice, cooked with thick coconut milk and often served during special or auspicious occasions, such as Sinhalese New Year.
One of the most common ways to garnish kiribath is with lunu miris, a sambol chili sauce made from red chilies, onions, lemon juice, salt and sometimes dry Maldive fish, all ground into a paste using a stone mortar and pestle.

King coconut (Cocos nucifera) is a variety of coconut, native to Sri Lanka, where it is known as Thembili (Sinhala තැඹිලි). Sweeter than regular coconuts, there are several sub varieties of the king coconut-the most common being the "red dwarf" (kaha thambili, commonly referred to as gon thambili). The other variety is "ran thambili", a smaller variety containing about forty nuts in a bunch. The king coconut tree is shorter than coconut trees, and are found commonly growing wild in many areas of the country.

King coconut water has been used in Ayurveda. One of the most common uses is a mixture of Aralu powder (Myrobalans) added to the water of one king coconut.

Sri Lanka now exports packaged king coconut water.

Pasikuda - (Pronounced Paasikkudah - historic Tamil translation "Green-Algae-Bay")

Pasikuda is a coastal resort town located 35 kilometers northwest of Batticaloa, Batticaloa District, Sri Lanka. Historically a small Tamil hamlet alongside nearby Kalkudah, it now forms the sibling town of Kalkudah. The bay with the reef which runs at least 1 km from the shore, allowing shallow water bathing in a huge area, is among the best of the island in the summer season (April-October), competing with the Nilaveli/Uppuveli beaches of Trincomalee. 'Passi' as it is commonly called is even better than those beaches for swimming and snorkeling from shore, and also offers excellent dive trips.

Masks in Sri Lanka!!
The authentic Masks and Masking Traditions of Sri Lanka are extra ordinary culture phenomenon and a significant contribution Sri Lanka has made to the Asian Cultural spectrum.
The traditional masks are carved from light Balsa like Kaduru wood (Nux Vomica). Kaduru trees grow in the marshy lands bordering paddy fields. This wood is light, soft and easy to carve.
Wooden Raksha masks are used to recount the tales of the Rakshasas in a “Kolam Dance” (traditional comic folk plays) performance.
According to legends, Sri Lanka was earlier ruled by a race called Rakshasas (devils) whose king was Ravana of the Ramayana. Rakshasas could assume various forms. Although they have 24 forms of Rakshasas only few are performed in Kolam dance.
Raksha masks used in the Kolam dances include:
Naga – Cobra that captures its enemies and makes them slaves.
Gurulu – Hawk or Eagle that rescues the captives from the Naga.
Maru – Demon of death.
Ginidal – Fire Devil that projects anger and wards off evil.
Mayura – Peacock that brings peace, harmony and prosperity.
Dwi Naga – Twin Cobra Devil that brings protection from all evils and danger.
Mal Guru – Flowery Eagle that brings fame and fortune.

Sri Lankan Rice & Curry....
Sri Lankan cooking has evolved around rice. The national meal is not referred to as “curry” but as “rice and curry”: a mountainous plate of rice generally accompanied by assorted meat and/or vegetable curries, various pickles, sambols, and a handful of tiny papadums.

More than 15 varieties of rice are grown on the island, from tiny white translucent varieties to long-grained "Basmati" and the nutty red "Kakuluhaal". Locals will take balls of cooked rice and rub the highly spiced accompaniments into them, massaging the mixture gently between the fingers to blend the flavours.

We were once a group of mischievous adventure seekers who went in search of this magical island’s undiscovered hot spots. We’ve seen glorious sunrises creeping up through magnificent mountains and golden sunsets over crystal blue beaches. Witnessed amazing wildlife in the most extraordinary fashion. Every which way we looked we were in for a surprise and the desire to explore more, soon became an obsession. The obsession became an obligation to share with the rest of the world on what we discovered. So, we formed Explore Serendib in the year 2016. Now, we want everyone to fall in love, the same way we fell in love with this little gem of an island, Sri Lanka.
