ROAD TRIP PART 2: LAVENDISH WILD SAFARI HOTEL AND THE MIGHTY MAHAWELI RIVER.

After traveling east from Riveston, we arrived at Lavendish Wild Safari Hotel near Wasgamuwa National Park. The hotel is very reasonably priced, has comfortable AC rooms, well prepared food and extremely attentive staff providing excellent service. Thank you to the management and staff of the hotel who took care of us really well.

Prior to our evening safari in Wasgamuwa National Park, we visited the mighty Mahaweli River, which runs through the park and is one of Sri Lanka's great rivers.

ROAD TRIP PART 1: RIVESTON

Riveston is one of Sri Lanka's hidden gem destinations. At 4,700 feet above sea level on the Eastern slopes of The Knuckles Range in Sri Lanka's Central Highlands, Riveston is a cool change. Clouds cover the top of the mountains but just below magnificent views open up. Below Riveston is the Moragahakanda Dam, Sri Lanka's largest inland water body.

During the annual migration season, the stunning pink-feathered flamingos make their way to Sri Lanka's wetlands and lagoons, where they feed on small crustaceans and insects. This period usually takes place from November to March, and it's an excellent opportunity for birdwatching enthusiasts to witness these majestic birds up close.

However, it's essential to be aware that flamingos are a vital part of the ecosystem and that we must take steps to protect their habitats and ensure their continued survival

This is the moment Isle of Smiles was born. While sitting on top of Sigiriya Rock Fortress back in July 1996, I decided to start promoting travel experiences in Sri Lanka. More than 25 years later, Isle of Smiles is still providing a personal touch to the travel requirements of visitors to Sri Lanka.
