Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a forest reserve and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and has been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO. According to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Sinharaja is the country's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest. More than 60% of the trees are endemic and many of them are considered rare. 50% of Sri Lankan's endemics species of animals (especially butterfly, amphibians, birds, snakes and fish species). It is home to 95% endemic birds.

The world heritage site comprises two geographically-separated components with the Knuckles Conservation Forest lying to the north and the Peak Wilderness/Horton Plains complex further south. Sri Lanka's highlands are situated in the south-central part of the island. These montane forests, where the land rises to 2,500 metres above sea-level, are home to an extraordinary range of flora and fauna, including several endangered species such as the western-purple-faced langur, the Horton Plains slender loris and the Sri Lankan leopard. The region is considered a super biodiversity hotspot.

Dambulla Golden Rock Cave Temple

There are five caves (shrine rooms) in Dambulla Golden Rock Cave Temple. Dambulla is gigantic outcropping rising 160m above surrounding plain. The circumference of the base of the rock is more than 1.5 km. All of these caves are full of statues of Buddha and various personages of the Buddhist Order or History.
Oral traditions suggest that this temple was built in the 1st Century BC, by King Valagamba. This cave monastery, is the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The cave walls and ceiling are entirely painted (covering an area of 2,100 m2) with paintings depicting early Buddhist historical events and murals with traditional Buddhist designs. Like all the other cave temples, this one is dimly lit, preserving the vibrant colors of the paintings and murals. Dambulla Golden Rock Cave Temple is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites located in the region known as Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle.

One of the most significant and sacred cities that belong to the ancient world, Anuradhapura was the early Important Kingdom in north central region in Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura was the Principal City of Sri Lanka for nearly 1500 years and home to 126 Kings of the island. There have been found archaeological remains of 3000 to 4000 monastic units. Hosting UNESCO world heritage sites this city is the core of Buddhism and its people due to its grandeur history and the vast array of Buddhist monuments that dates back to more than 2000 years. The largest brick monuments of the world named, Jethavanarama Stupa, Abhayagiriya Stupa and Ruwanweliseya Stupa were situated there. SriMahabodhi the sacred Bodhi tree (β€œThe Recorded Oldest Historical Tree in the World”) shrine of the Mahaviharaya which was planted in the 3rd Century BC.

Kandy is the last Royal Kingdom of Sri Lanka with picturesque landscape surrounded by beautiful mountains located in the central part of the island positioned 1,600 feet above the MSL- Mean Sea Level. Kandy Sri Lanka is well known with the Sacred Tooth relic Temple which is most venerated Buddhist Temple and The Royal Botanic Gardens with more than 4,000 labeled species of flora and also Kandy is a β€œPlanned City” during British colonial period of Ceylon. Considering these facts UNESCO declared Kandy as a UNESCO World Heritage.
Today Kandy is the second most famous city of Sri Lanka with a total area of 1,940 SQ KM and major tourist attraction. Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic was built within the Royal Palace complex which houses the only surviving Relic of Buddha.
During the month of August Kandy becomes highly crowded due to the Kandy Esala Perehera which is hosted as an annual tradition of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. It usually attracts a large number of local and foreign tourists who value tradition, customs and Buddhist heritage. This egregious night parade stalks more than 50 elephants along with colorful kandyan dancers and drummers.

Galle Fort

Galle Fort in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument, which even after more than 432 years maintains a polished appearance, due to extensive reconstruction work done by Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka.
Galle is one that has impressive and irreplaceable number of heritage sites and the only living old city. Galle fort covers an area of 36 hectares and encloses several museum, a clock tower, churches, mosques, a light house, around 473 private dwellings identified inside the fort, out of them almost 100 building were built before 1850.
The heritage value of the fort has been recognized by the UNESCO and the site has been inscribed as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site under criteria iv, for its unique exposition of "an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries."

Sigiriya

The ruins of the capital built by the King Kassapa I (473 – 491 AD). The rock is most probably a volcanic reaction during Pre-Cambrian period with two strata. It is centered on a massive rock rising 180 meters above the surrounding plan 360 meters above mean sea level.
A series of galleries and staircases emerging from the mouth of a gigantic lion constructed of bricks and plaster provide access to the site. This fortified garden city of Sigiriya rock fortress is an exceptional master piece of ancient urban planning / landscape & architecture / construction technology /exceptional hydraulic engineering & management / ancient fine art with unique harmony between nature and human imagination and all these living examples proved that it was a Well Planned City & Palace in 5th Century AD. Sigiriya rock fortress is recognized as one of the best preserved surviving ancient urban sites in Asia from the 1st millennium or simply it’s a Living Museum.

Polonnaruwa Kingdom (1017- 1235 AD) or the Ancient city of Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka for three centuries between the 11th to 13th centuries after the destruction of Anuradhapura Kingdom in 993. It is located in north central province of Sri Lanka. Due to its archeological prominence and the ancient technological superiority UNESCO declared Polonnaruwa as a World Heritage in 1982 under the name of Ancient City of Polonnaruwa.
Created seat of learning at Alahana Pirivena (World Heritage Site) about the time Padua and Oxford established in Europe. Buddhist and Hindu monuments could be seen within same locations in this ancient Polonnaruwa city.
