One of the best preserved fortification in South and South East Asia with 14 bastions. In 1588 built fortress by Portuguese was enlarged and improved during the Dutch and British periods
The fort existing 40 hectares is a unique example of town planning, architecture and engineering of the colonial rulers. Military architecture is designed with the western conception but the materials, building techniques and the labour that implemented such a task were Sri Lankan.
This makes Galle fort a true example of a product of cultural combination.
Galle harbour was the main port of call since 11th century in the East trading purposes.
