After lockdown what’s going on Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka has it all – a balmy tropical climate, dramatic sandy beaches backed by lush deep green forests that sway to the sound of bird song, high-altitude hill-top hideaways, a diverse array of wildlife and traditional working tea plantations. With cities and towns bursting with colour, noise and life, Sri Lanka’s proud heritage is well-preserved and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
NINE ARCH BRIDGE
Surrounded by the lush greenery of the hill country, the Demodara Nine Arch Bridge is not only an engineering marvel, but also a place of exquisite serenity likened to the countryside through which the Hogwarts express passes through in the Harry Potter world. The railway bridge, being one of the most notable engineering marvels in Sri Lanka serves as a testament to Sri Lankan engineering ingenuity.Best Known ForNature and Outdoors:
The spectacular lush green scenery, along with steaming trains passing by provides an idyllic setting to bring out the best views of the hill country.
The iconic bridge is also known for its engineering ingenuity being entirely built with rocks, bricks and cement without any sort of steel support.
Interesting Facts
The Nine Arch Bridge is locally known as ‘Ahas Namaye Palama’ meaning ‘nine skies bridge’ in Sinhala. The name derives from the visual experience. When you stand below the bridge and look up you can see the sky through the nine arches.
The railway bridge was built during the First World War and eventually completed in 1921 after undergoing many shortcomings as a result of the world war.
The ‘builder of the bridge’ has been debated by many, however, it is widely regarded that the builder was a Sri Lankan that went by the name of P. K. Appuhami, a native of the area.
The original structure of the bridge was supposed to be based on a steel frame in order to support the structure.
The outbreak of the First World War meant the steel that was supposed to be used for the bridge was transferred for war efforts which left it impossible for construction due to the uneven and marshy ground it was going to be constructed on.
However, a brave Appuhami believed that it could be done and eventually was given the task by the British.
Appuhami used such innovative and cost efficient methods that the bridge was built in a single year and at a fraction of the original cost.
The story goes that the British colonials
ELEPHANTS ON ROAD!!
Experience the wonderful encounter with the gentle giants along the Buttala-Sella Kataragama Road
The Buttala – Sella Kataragama Road is a major link in the roadway that connects the west coast with the southeast coast of Sri Lanka. As the flora transitions from wetland trees to dry zone evergreens, the road continues to undulate like a continuous grey ribbon. With the wild untamed jungle on either side of the road, driving down this route can be a pleasurable experience by itself.
However, the drive is made awesome by the occasional jumbo that fearlessly enter the road. As this is elephant country, sightings of elephants are a common sight. Yet, what sets the Buttala – Sella Kataragama Road apart is the opportunity to feed a wild gentle giant, or see one munching on a spread of fruit that lies before it.
Many motorists buy fruits including bananas in advance at wayside little stalls that dot the road from Lunugamvehera to Sella Kataragama, anticipating an encounter with an elephant. These giants of the wild are accustomed to the traffic that comes to a near standstill as they lounge near the road. Some adventurous jumbos would simply walk along the road, ignoring the vehicles.
When you are travelling to the southeast coast, look forward to your encounter and be careful with the gentle giants.

Pretty villages and small towns sit sprawling along the coast or hidden deep into the countryside, its varied landscape dotted with important holy sites, temples and ancient ruins waiting to be explored.
Are you looking for a holiday destination that will help you forget the daily rigours? Are you looking for a place that will take you to cloud nine, away from the hustle and bustle of your hectic life?
Look no further: Sri Lanka, this tiny island nation shaped like a droplet of water just below the Indian peninsula, has much to offer any passionate traveller. Don’t let its size deceive you; Sri Lanka punches above its weight when it comes to tourism.
