Kataragama Esala Perahera - A Religious Festival Unifying Unifying Many Faiths...

An integral event of the Sri Lankan cultural calendar, the Kataragama Esala Perahera attracts devotees of many faiths from all parts of the country in large numbers to pay homage to the much-revered Hindu god, Skanda who is also fervently venerated by Buddhists as Kataragama Deviyo.

With a grand history, thousands of devotees from all corners of the island arrive at the Kataragama Devale (shrine) to take part in the fortnight long festival which culminates with the Maha Perahera (Grand Pageant) which flaunts the relics placed on the ceremonial tusker through the town at the July full moon.

A dazzling display of whip crackers, fire dancers, drummers and dancing ensembles representative of the main local three traditional forms of dancing; Udarata, Pahatarata and Sabaragamuwa in colorful traditional costumes, torch bearers and many vibrantly adorned elephants can be witnessed at the pageant.

Witness Sri Lanka's most colorful cultural festival, Kandy Perahera Festival in 2022 - From 02nd August to 12th of August 2022
Kandy Esala Perahera ( The festival of the tooth of Lord Buddha ) is the grand cultural festival of the month of August held in Sri Lanka each year. Kandy Perahera takes place in July or August in Kandy, Kandy Perahera is a unique symbol of Sri Lanka's unique culture. Kandy Perahera is a Buddhist festival consisting of dances and nicely decorated Elephants. Colorfully clad dancers perform unique Sri Lankan traditional dances as they walk along the road side by side with colorfully decorated Elephants.

The Esala Perahera in Kandy is believed to be a fusion of two separate but interconnected "Peraheras" ( Processions ) – The Esala and Dalada. The Esala Perahera which is thought to date back to the 3rd century BC, was a ritual enacted to request the gods for rainfall. The Dalada Perahera is believed to have begun when the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka from India during the 4th Century AD.

Badulla railway station is the last station on the Main Line, and is 292.3 km away from Colombo. It is located 652.43 m above mean sea level and 1 km from Badulla, the capital city of Uva Province. The trains that run on the Main Line, including the Podi Menike and Udarata Menike express trains end at the station.
