JAFFNA FORT

Introduction and Hisitory

Close to the coastal village of Gurunagar, Jaffna, is where you’ll find Jaffna Fort, an intriguing piece of architecture built by the Portuguese between 1618 and 1625. While under Portuguese occupation, the fort was called ‘Fortress of Our Lady of Miracles of Jafanapatão’, a name derived from the neighbouring church dedicated to Virgin Mary.

In 1658, the Dutch took hold of the fort, and the Portuguese lost their last stronghold in Sri Lanka. The Dutch went on to expand the fort, but again, the fort swapped hands in 1795, when the British invaded and drove out the Dutch. The fort remained a British garrison up until 1948.

Why You Must Visit

Today, the 400-year-old fort is a visceral reminder of Sri Lanka’s colonial past, as well as a maritime heritage. The massive fort complex overlooks the Jaffna lagoon, and while much of it remains intact, a certain part of the fort had to undergo extensive restoration efforts.

The fort is known as one of the greatest Dutch forts in Asia, owing to the extensive alterations they made to the original Portuguese design, including adding defensive triangles to mirror something similar to a snowflake (which is especially visible from an aerial vantage point).

The gorgeous fort is settled within the borders of a pentagon, which is, in turn, surrounded by a moat. The fort’s walls were constructed with a combination of mortar, brick, stone and coral, and to this day, are mostly hidden underneath grassy slopes.

If you’re into history and the exciting architectural wonders it has gifted us with, a visit to Jaffna Fort would be ideal for you!

Sangupiddy Bridge is a road bridge which is built across the Jaffna lagoon. This bridge notably connects the Sangupiddy village in Kilinochchi district with Karaitivu Island in Jaffna district. The bridge was inaugurated on 16th January 2011 and is one of the only two road bridges connecting the Jaffna Peninsula with the mainland. The Sangupiddy Bridge is part of the Jaffna-Mannar Highway (A32) and reduces the journey from the south of Sri Lanka to Jaffna by 110 km or 3 hours.

Nallur Kandaswamy Temple

Jaffna’s most notable sight is the large Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, about 2km northeast of the town centre. Dedicated to Murugam (known to the Buddhist Sinhalese as Kataragama), this is the most impressive Hindu temple in Sri Lanka, and the only one on the island to rival the great shrines of India. The original temple is thought to date back to the mid-fifteenth century, though it was destroyed in 1620 by the Portuguese. The present structure was begun in 1807 and has now developed into an enormous religious complex, surrounded by red-and-white striped walls. There are numerous shrines inside, richly decorated corridors framed in rows of golden arches and a beautiful courtyard with a large tank. Men must remove their shirts before entering. There are no fewer than six pujas daily,The Pooja times are at 5am, 10am, noon, 4.15pm (small puja), 4.30pm ('special' puja ), 5pm and 6.45pm. with three between 4pm and 5pm, the best time to visit.

Point Pedro is a beautiful town that lies in the Jaffna District of Sri Lanka. It lies in the northern most point of the island. In the year 2004, this area was badly devastated by the Tsunami. Locals say that fishing boat were located 1 km inland. Here the shore line is magnificent given its coral reef offshore and misty white sandy beach. The sea here is shallow and not a very good spot for swimming. From here, you’ll pass through the succession of the tiny hamlets where you can even spot few sharks.

The crumbling Point Pedro is the second town in the Jaffna peninsula. It has a few evidences of an ingrained colonial style. The settlements are poor and irregular here. However, you may struggle to find a place to eat. The town has a bus station that is located 100 meter southwards. Eastern coast of the town is 3 mile wide with a 20 mile long beach that is brimming with sand dunes that may go up to a height of 100 feet often sprawling to Thalayady. The soil here is porous and has a water table deep underground which has an estimated one billion litres of fresh water. Given its geography, Point Pedro is a great tourist attraction of Sri Lanka.
