Meet Anuradhapura Kings at night!!

ඉතිං එන්න. අපි රෑට අනුරාධපුර ඇවිදිමු, වඳිමු!!
Last Tuesday (30th April) I paid a night visit to the Anuradhapura ancient city. The biggest stupa in the world, the most venerated stupa in the world, the first stupa that is having written evidence. It was amazing!!! A whole different world than we see in the day time.

In 5th century BC a rebel prince called Pandukabhaya was throned as the king of this resplendent island. He is the first local born in the royal lineage of Lanka.
He is considered as the father of city planning of Sri Lanka. Because he started one of the greatest kingdoms of the world. Lasted more than 1400 years.

The monuments in Anuradhapura are still having its grandeur of our ancestors Scientific, engineering and economic developments. These are the tangible fruits of prosperity of our island civilization.

They had microscopic gold decorated chains, intricately carved with unbelievable geometric designs.

In 4th century AD the Roman empire had the tallest stone monuments in the world (When the empire falled). The pyramids in Giza. (483,471,303 meters) But, even before that Sri Lankans built the largest brick monuments in the world. The Jethawanaramaya, Abhayagiriya and Ruwanweliseya Stupas. (404, 370, 300 Meters)

And they placed very nice artifacts near the larger monuments. The Naga Symbol (Cobra Hood) is one of those. See how clever they had carved the cobras body scales too.

Arts such as paintings, murals, sculptures are a form of storytelling.
Our ancient storytellers used paintings sculptures and drums to venerate Gauthama Buddha!
The Dambulla Golden Rock cave complex is such a marvelous place to experience such arts.
