Sri Lanka in 1930s & 19th century stills
Our posts about “Old Ceylon” seem to be much appreciated :)
The last one “Down Memory Lane" dates back to the 1940s
while this new one goes back to the 1930s, followed by charming “stills” from the 19th century.
A bygone era indeed!
Angampora
Angampora is a Sri Lankan martial art form that combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise, and meditation - and it is fast regaining popularity after the British “colonial Masters”, frightened by its power,
attempted to eradicate it from 1815 onwards through the punishment of gunshot to the knee, effectivley crippling the practioners!
A key component is the namesake angam, which incorporates hand-to-hand fighting, and illangam, involving the use of indigenous weapons such as the ethunu kaduwa, staves, knives and swords.
Another component known as maya angam uses spells and incantations for combat. Angampora's distinct feature lies in the use of pressure point attacks to inflict pain or permanently paralyze the opponent.
Fighters usually make use of both striking and grappling techniques, and fight until the opponent is caught in a submission lock that they cannot escape. Usage of weapons is discretionary.
