A waterfall is an area where water flows over a vertical drop or a series of steep drops in the course of a stream or river. While most of us have a particular image of what a waterfall looks like, there are actually many types of waterfalls. Waterfalls can form cascades, horsetails, cataracts, squares, plunges, fans, and even be frozen.

Simply the waterfalls could be named as one of most magical creations of nature and there are 1000s of waterfalls around the world including listed & non-listed. Currently, there are more than 400 listed waterfalls in Sri Lanka yet there are more to be listed. The heights of the waterfalls could sometimes be varied as there are differences between the available sources.

Sri Lanka, in comparison to its size, has perhaps the largest number of waterfalls of any country in the world. Indeed, there are over 400 recorded waterfalls in Sri Lanka even though most of them are not highlighted on world map. The reason for the huge number of waterfalls is the geological formation of the hill country hence most of them are situated in the central highlands of Sri Lanka.

The tallest waterfall in the world is Angel Waterfall in Venezuela which is with a height of 979m whereas the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka is Bambarakanda waterfall which is with a height of 241m.

In this list we have mainly identified and described prominent waterfalls only, yet in due course we will update more waterfalls as we visit them. Also we tried only to include individual waterfalls without taking waterfall chains / clusters into this list as we are hoping to publish a separate post regarding waterfall chains in Sri Lanka.

Surathali Waterfall – Surathali Ella waterfall is situated in Walhaputenna in the Ratnapura district. It is 60m high and is made up of 3 segments. It is named after a movie which was shot in the area.
