Wasgamuwa National Park / වස්ගමුව ජාතික උද්‍යානය

It is one of the Important Bird Areas in Sri Lanka.

ලංකාවේ වන රක්ෂිත අතර ප්‍රධාන තැනක් ගන්නා වස්ගමුව ජාතික වන උද්‍යානය රක්ෂිත භූමියක් ලෙස නම් කර ඇත්තේ 1937 වසරේදීය. මුල් කාලයේ මේ වස්ගමුව ජාතික වන උද්‍යානය හැඳින්වූයේ ‘වලස්ගමුව‘ නමිනි.

එය එසේ හැඳින්වීමට හේතු වූයේ වලසුන්ගෙන් බහුල රක්ෂිත භූමියක් වූ හෙයිනි. ඉන් ටික කාලයකට පසුව ‘වලස්ගමුව‘ ‘වාස්ගමුව’ ලෙස හැඳින්වූ අතර පසුකාලීනව ‘වස්ගමුව‘ යන නමින් හඳුන්වනු ලැබේ.

වස්ගමුව ජාතික වන උද්‍යානය උතුªරින් අඹන් ගඟින්ද, නැඟෙනහිරින් මහවැලි ගඟින්ද, බස්නාහිරින් කළු ගඟින්ද, දකුණින් මුතු අංගනා ඔයෙන් ද සීමා වේ. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට ආවේණික පක්ෂීන් ගෙන් සියට තිස්නවයක් (39 %) වස්ගමුව ජාතික වන උද්‍යානයේ සිටින අතර පක්ෂි විශේෂ එකසිය හතර දෙනකු වස්ගමුව ජාතික වන උද්‍යානයේ සිටී.

Wasgamuwa National Park located in the districts of Matale and Polonnaruwa and bordered by the 'Mahaweli' and 'Amban' rivers, stretches an impressive 36,948 hectares.

It was declared a National park in 1984, making it the only one in the Central Province. Home to a huge variety of flora and fauna (23 species of mammal - including elephants and bears, 143 birds, 8 amphibians, 17 fresh water fishes, 17 reptiles, 50 butterflies and 150 plants), this park is truly a paradise for the nature lover.

With many small scale ancient tanks and several other ruins and ancient religious sites the park also has significant historical importance. For keen hikers, it is also home to the 'Sudu Kanda' mountain range (about 470m above sea level).

The Esala Perahera in Kandy is one of the oldest and grandest of all Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, featuring dancers, jugglers, musicians, fire-breathers, and lavishly decorated elephants. This is held in Esala (July or August) which is the month that is believed to commemorate the first teaching given by the Buddha after he attained enlightenment. The Kandy Esala Perahera lasts for ten days while various festivities can be witnessed right throughout. The Sinhalese term ‘Perahera’ means a parade of musicians, dancers, singers, acrobats and various other performers accompanied by a large number of caparisoned Tuskers and Elephants parading the streets in celebration of a religious event.
