Hidden an hour outside of Yangon is a lively market in Hlegu’s Karen village. Patrons watch intently as local artisans showcase their skills, from traditional rattan weaving to delicately crafting jewellery. In a small group of up to twelve people, you can experience the arts and crafts market with a local guiding you through the highlights.
From the city, you’ll enjoy a leisurely one-hour trishaw ride to the rural Hlegu Township. The Karen locals will welcome you with smiles to their village and give you a taste of traditional Burmese culture. Take in the vibrant colours of hand-dyed fabrics and purring sounds of handlooms as you move through the stalls with plenty of time to pick out your favourite keepsakes. Surrounded by women and men in woven sarongs - known as longyi - you can sample local flavours with a home-cooked lunch.
Before departing the village, you’ll join the local ladies for a weaving workshop. Rattan weaving is the backbone of local income, and your hosts will share stories about its cultural and historical importance.
