Misty morning in Central Mongolia

No sunrise for us on this misty morning, as our host Dorio prepared the horses for the first riding group. Having just come out of the hot and sunny Gobi, the previous night's storm and the cool damp morning made us feel like we'd been transported somewhere else entirely.

The main reason we traveled to Mongolia: to meet the famous eagle hunters🦅🏔We stayed with an eagle hunter family and spent two days horseback riding, eagle hunting and fishing with them. It was awesome🤠🐎

Ronaldo and Twinkle Toes

These two were great fun. And they were having great fun. No TV or video games for them. They had the Gobi for their playground - roaming around, playing with whatever took their fancy, and pestering the family's long suffering goats. Ronaldo, at 10, was a little less smiley and a little more hesitant around us, but his little sister Twinkle Toes in her sparkly Mary Janes was happily posing for every photo, and taking the odd one back on the beat up old phone she carried around in her back pocket.

To Badga, the big, quiet, funny, bald man who looks like a mad and scary Russian soldier but is way more like a loving teddy bear. Thank you for driving us through Mongolia’s Gobi Desert and Orkhon Valley, and taking us places I never thought could be that beautiful. Your navigation skills through the desert were unbelievable, and your connection with all the Mongolian families we visited, truly remarkable. Thank you for your care for us and our possessions, and your patience all the times we asked you to stop to take a photo, or to just p*e. There are so many moments with you that I will never forget, and that will always put a smile on my face. Sorry if I could not wrestle you every day, if not every hour, as you wanted, but you can always come get me in Canada. My doors will always be open to you.

In Mongolia, ordinary moments become extraordinary. For example, as I was walking toward the country’s famous “Flaming Cliffs” (which blaze red and orange at sunset), I turned around to spot the sun in the middle of its descendent. And at that very moment, five wild horses basked in its rays, as if I had put them there myself. 🐎🌇🇲🇳🐎🌇🇲🇳🐎🌇🇲🇳🐎🌇🇲🇳🐎🌇🇲🇳

Some people think it is Switzerland... But, it is Mongolia

We climbed and slid, climbed and slid, climbed and slid. As the dune got steeper, the lungs burned and the legs ached, two steps forward, one step back. It seemed like it would never end, but after forty minutes we reached the top, the Gobi spread out before us, bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun. It was worth every single step.
