A German who fell in love with Cospicua has embarked on a great and green mission: he wants to inspire at least one in every 100 people on the island to plant a tree. Klaus Zerbin, 62, first came to Malta in 2002 to learn English and noticed that more and more concrete was eclipsing … Continued

EcoMarineMalta, an incredible love for Malta's cetaceans!
EcoMarine Malta is an example of how magic can happen on an island as small in area as it is full with opportunities. Patrizia Patti, Ecomarine's marine biologist, in a short space of time has created environmentally sustainable tourism. But that is not all. Through the tours she organises, tourism is not only a fantastic way to spend wonderful hours of holiday, but also to learn. Being with her on a boat means taking real lessons in marine biology: from dolphins to seabirds, from turtles to Poseidonias. All this together with Giovanni, captain, skipper and co-founder of EcoMarineMalta.

Walking down to the tip of Vittoriosa (fifteen minutes from our house), you will reach Fort St. Angelo, a massive fortress that used to protect Malta from invasions, and is still administered today by the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta.

Built in the 13th century by Frederick II's knights of Sicily, it became then a stronghold of the Hospitaller Order, resisting to the Great Siege of Malta by the Ottoman empire. During British occupation, the fort survived the sieges and bombings of Word War Two.

Ready to delve into history? By coming to our home, St. Mary's House in the Three Cities, you can visit this and other amazing places.

First stop: Birgu-Vittoriosa. Peace and history. 10 minutes walk from St. Mary's house in the Three Cities.

A few minutes walk down the road from our home, welcome to the first of the Three Cities, officially known as Vittoriosa, "the victorious city" and locally as il-Birgu. Get lost in this medieval village, melting into the authentic heart of Maltese popular culture: kids playing in the alleys, grandpas drinking coffee in the squares, and grandmas chatting from their balconies. Walk, smile, take a break: the blue sky is upon you and the sea is not far on the horizon.

But Vittoriosa has a troubled history due to its strategic position on Malta's Harbour. For this reason, it has been used by the templars as a fortress to defend the island from foreign incursions. With its huge fort St. Angelo, it is not hard to imagine that this calm and relaxing place has once been Malta's capital.

In the centre of Vittoriosa you can also admire St. Lawrence Church, erected by the Order of St. John. Inside this beautiful work of architecture you can see various paintings from the late middle ages.

Like the rest of the Three Cities, Vittoriosa is becoming an artisty hub, hosting many small boutiques where you can find artistic and handcraft products.

Tomorrow, we will bring you to Senglea, the second of the Three Cities!

Our lovely home, St. Mary's House in the Three Cities, lies in the heart of Malta's historical centre: the Three Cities (It-Tlett Ibliet). Coming out of the Grand Harbour (il-Port il-Kbir) on two limestone peninsulas, the Three Cities host Malta's architectonic heritage and a traditional, cozy local culture. Tomorrow we will bring you to Birgu, the oldest of the Three Cities.

The huge walls of Fort St. Elmo that surround Malta’s capital city Valletta have been protecting its inhabitants from pirates’ incursions since the 15th century. Today, they embrace the magic of this island and give you an amazing view of the winter sky and sea. Today, the chambers where the ancient templars used to live are open to visitors and host the Museum of War. After visiting the castle, you can either take a stroll through the bridge to the ancient port, or walk back to Valletta's coffeeshops and alleys.
