WELCOME TO THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF PLAYA DEL CARMEN (ISP)

Playa del Carmen is a new and wonderful community that brings people together from all over Mexico and the world. While we all may originally come here for the beauty of the beaches, jungle, culture and weather, we stay for the people. We are an adventurous, open-minded, and generous people, who want to make the world a better place. W

e also want to educate our children to follow similar paths. The International School of Playa del Carmen plans to educate Playa’s children with the most modern and respected educational philosophies and texts, while encouraging students to be thoughtful and giving humans, eager to make a positive difference in the world. We will be using both the Mexican SEP curriculum as well as the American Common Core Curriculum. Students will receive dual certification, and this provides our graduating students with diplomas that will allow them to apply directly to North American and European universities, as well as Mexican. Our teaching methods focus on real world skills through inquiry and project based learning. Students will develop their math, science, history, language arts, artistic and athletic skills with lessons that focus on problem solving for today’s real life challenges. ISP encourages our students to explore their intellectual and artistic capacities, as well as their abilities to serve their communities. ISP follows a standardized, International Educational program that is used throughout Mexico and the World at the best International and American schools (e.g. IAS Cancun, ASF Mexico City, International School Bangkok, etc.). GOALS FOR THE FIRST FIVE YEARS:

1. In the next five years, ISP will work with AdvancED (http://www.advanc-ed.org/) , ASOMEX (Association of American Schools in Mexico) and the Tri-Association (Association of American Schools of Central America, Colombia, Caribbean and Mexico) to acquire international accreditation and school improvement programs

2. Create a world class school that allows our students to graduate and gain acceptance into the best universities in the world

3. Incorporate our community’s organizations, businesses, and people into our educational program to give our students experience in the real world

4. Provide professional development for teachers and administrators to ensure that ISP follows cutting edge pedagogical strategies

5. Provide a world class extra-curricular program that allows students to pursue their passion for the arts, sports, health and community service

6. Create not only a school for our students, but also a community center for our families where we can come together to work to make Playa del Carmen a better place for our children, families and friends

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF PLAYA DEL CARMEN FACT SHEET

1. ISP will use similar academic and organizational programs as those used at International and American school all over Mexico and the world (American Foundation School Mexico City, International American School Cancun, International School of Paris, International School of Bangkok)

2. ISP will be accredited by both SEP (Mexico) and AdvancED (USA)

3. Kinder and Primary students will be educated in a bilingual environment with native English and Spanish speaking teachers

4. Secondary and Preparatory students will cover all Spanish and Mexican history courses required by SEP in Spanish, and all other courses in English

5. ISP encourages a well-rounded education that incorporates the arts, physical education and community service

6. ISP will not have “Pre-First.” Students will proceed directly from Kinder Three to First grade

7. A research based, age appropriate literacy and numeracy program will be used in kinder and primary school

8. Students will use Inquiry/Project Based learning to improve their real-world skills

9. Secondary and Preparatory classes will be encouraged to conduct extensive educational and career planning throughout their high school years

10. The use of technology is key to today’s education, and ISP will ensure that students will have access to consistent, high speed internet, and the technological tools they will use in their later education and professional lives.

11. Because students learn better in comfortable environments, an enriching aesthetic environment will be provided at the school

ADMINISTRATIVE BACKGROUND

Dr. Alicia Meno has been teaching and administrating at schools in the United States and Latin America for the past 20 years. She has a Master’s degree in bilingual/multi-cultural education (specializing in English-Spanish) from Columbia College, and a Doctorate in curriculum development from DePaul University. Alicia taught for 10 years in Chicago’s inner city with a largely latino community, and won teacher of the year award at A.N. Pritsker School in Chicago. In the second half of her educational career, Alicia worked at International schools serving as librarian, teacher, curriculum director, principal, and director of schools in Bogota, Cartagena, CES-IAS Cancun, Colegio Puerto Aventuras, and the International School of Playa del Carmen. Alicia looks forward to using her in-depth education and experience to create a world class school at ISP. Dr. Meno is the author of Professional Development Reform (2008). Jim Conklin has taught and administrated in Canada, Korea, Taiwan, Bogota, Cartagena, Cancun and Playa del Carmen. He has served as teacher, coach, department head, curriculum designer, assistant principal and principal, and specializes in high school education, creative writing, professional development, and writing. Conklin graduated from the University of British Columbia, Canada with an MFA in creative writing, and has teaching certification with the Ontario College of Teachers.

Nuestros alumnos seleccionados de 5to y 6to de ISP participaron en la Feria de las Ciencias, Matemáticas y Artes; compartiendo con las 12 escuelas de la Zona Escolar 048. Nuestro stand fue de los Duelos Matemáticos con el objetivo de promover la competencia lógico-matemática.

Happy Mother's Day!

ISP had the honor to celebrate all the incredible mother's of our students and thank them for everything they do. The event took place at Zenzi, where they were able to relax while enjoying a delicious breakfast among friends. They also watched a lovely video created by their little ones and their teachers, a few words were spoken and a few happy tears were shed. It was a beautiful day full of love! Happy Mother´s Day to all the ISP wonderful MOMS!

Field Trip to Río Secreto

Our ISP students from 1st to 6th grade celebrated Children's Day and Earth Day visiting the wonderful site "Río Secreto" where they had the opportunity to go through an amazing underground journey! While walking and swimming in between stalagmites, stalactites and many other types of formations, they learned how the Peninsula was formed, the importance of the aquifer, its preservation and how fragile is the ecosystem that we live in. Altogether was a day full of great experiences between friends and nature!

Kinder Field Trip to Croco Cun

They were able to interact, pet and get to know different animals from the Yucatan Peninsula. They learned about the importance of all the animals for the ecosystem, while having a great time with their friends and teachers!

The ISP After School Program is happy to welcome a new class: Taekwondo!

Dear Parents,

We are happy to introduce a new wonderful TAEKWONDO class taught by an extraordinary teacher, Jorge Enrique Valdivieso Pérez. Mr. Jorge has more than 20 years of experience in the practice and teaching of this great discipline to children from 3 years of age. He already has 11 years in the category "black belt". He is originally from Veracruz, Mexico. He has been living in Playa del Carmen for a few months where he opened his own academy. We are very fortunate to have his participation in the ISP After School Program!

Taekwondo is a discipline that requires perseverance, providing great benefits in return. Like other sports, it develops the physical capabilities of the body, but it is also a very technical discipline, which will help children learn to know and control their body. It is a very complete training, which will also provide social, psychological and important values to children. This discipline of martial origin bases its philosophy on Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit. Taekwondo seeks the realization of the human being in all senses. It is an instrument to achieve a balance both physical and mental. Children acquire important personal values and healthy habits as well.

It is an old method to exercise our bodies, mind and spirit. Children will learn Taekwondo in an active and fun challenging workout. It helps develop balance, coordination, discipline, concentration, respect, a general level of fitness and flexibility, and awareness of their own body. It also builds self-esteem and self-respect, helping them develop a sense of identity as individuals. It helps build personalities through self-expression in a fun way, as well as developing the potential of each child in their ability to learn in school and have a positive influence on life in general. They make the connection of the mind and body through their breathing too!

*** The class will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays (twice a week). It has a cost of $600 pesos per month. If you would like to enroll your child to this great new After School Program class, please let us know before May 6th at 2:00pm. You can register directly at the school office.

"Mi Súper Héroe Histórico Favorito"

Consistió en escoger una persona de interés del niño, ya fuera hombre, mujer, histórico, contemporáneo, vivo o no que haya aportado algo a la humanidad, desde sus ideas, su música, su habilidad deportiva, etc. A través de las tareas tuvieron que fundamentar porque lo escogieron, averiguar sobre su vida personal y sobre su carrera, traer fotos a modo de ilustración y con todo ese material armamos nuestro proyecto de escritura con un libro como producto final. De manera transversal desarrollamos la expresión oral a través de la exposición de su personaje.

¡Fue grandioso su aprendizaje y desempeño!

The second ISP "Book Fair" is dedicated to promote positive reading habits emphasizing quality reading material available to children, we stand by to support the educational system through book fairs and participating in events related to reading. Our commitment with the society and the field of education is to support parents, families and educators to train future generations with values, principles and skills acquired through resources and materials that we offer, as well as promoting a culture of reading.

📚 Book Fair Process:

· March 25 – The book fair will start at 12:30 pm. Each classroom will have a guided tour at the fair, with their teacher. This will be the moment when children can see the books, browse them, and select the titles that they like the most. When they arrive to the fair, they are given an envelope where they can write the titles of the books of their choice, as well as the price of each one. This envelope will be sent home in their Homework Notebook so parents can read it and if they would like to purchase the books, either send the money in the envelope the next day selecting the books they want to buy, or Parents can visit the Book Fair in the next two days at pick up, 1:30 pm Kindergarten and at 2:30 pm Elementary.

· March 26 - This second day the students who bring the money in their envelope visit the fair again with their teachers to purchase the books of their choice. Parents can visit the fair at pick up, 1:30 pm Kindergarten and at 2:30 pm Elementary.

· March 27 – During the third day, the students who bring the money in their envelope visit the fair again with their teachers to purchase the books of their choice. Parents can visit the fair at pick up, 1:30 pm Kindergarten and at 2:30 pm Elementary.

La segunda "Feria del Libro" de ISP es dedicada para promocionar hábitos de lectura positivos, con un énfasis en la calidad del material disponible para los niños. Nos ocupamos de apoyar el sistema educativo a través de ferias de libros y de la participación en eventos relacionados con la lectura. Nuestro compromiso con la sociedad y con el sistema educativo es apoyar a los padres, a las familias y educadores para preparar a las futuras generaciones con valores, principios y habilidades, adquiridas a través de recursos y materiales que ofrecemos, al igual que alentar la Cultura de la Lectura.

Proceso de la Feria del Libro:

Marzo 25 - La feria del libro empezará a las 12:30 pm. Cada salón tendrá un tour guiado a esta, con sus maestros. El tour será el momento en el cuál, los niños pueden ver los libros y seleccionar los títulos que más les gusten. Cuando lleguen a la feria, se les dará un sobre donde van a poder escribir los títulos de los libros de su elección, al igual que el precio de cada uno ellos. Este sobre será enviado a casa adentro de su Libreta de tareas para que los papás lo puedan leer para que al día siguiente, se envíe el dinero de los libros que quieran comprar ó los papás pueden visitar la feria los siguientes dos días al recoger a los niños de la escuela (1:30pm para kinder y 2:30 pm para primaria).

Marzo 26 - Los estudiantes que traen el dinero en el sobre visitan la feria del libro de nuevo, con sus maestros, para comprar los libros de su elección. En este día los papás pueden visitar la feria a la hora de salida (1:30pm para kinder y 2:30pm para primaria).
