The whiskered treeswift is a small bird native to SEA, known for its distinctive long, curved whisker-like feathers that extend from its face. They are agile fliers, gliding gracefully through the forest canopy. Unlike many other swift species, whiskered treeswifts perch conspicuously on exposed branches, making them easier to spot. They have a diet primarily consisting of insects, which they catch mid-flight. Whiskered treeswifts nest on the underside of tree branches, using saliva to glue their nests in place. Despite their widespread presence in various forested regions, they remain relatively understudied, contributing to their mysterious allure among ornithologists.

The Ashy tailorbird is a small passerine bird found in Southeast Asia, known for its distinctive reddish-brown head and ashy-gray plumage. These birds are skilled nest builders, using their beaks to "sew" leaves together with plant fibers, creating secure and camouflaged nests to protect their eggs and chicks from predators. They primarily inhabit mangroves, forests and shrublands, where they feed on insects and spiders. They are often spotted in pairs or small family groups, exhibiting strong territorial behavior. Despite their small size, they are quite vocal, with a repertoire of melodious calls used for communication and to defend their territory.

Spotted a marbled cat perched gracefully on a tree in Danum Valley.

This elusive cat, with its striking marbled coat, is a master of camouflage, blending seamlessly into the dense rainforest canopy. Small but agile, it measures around 45-62 cm in body length and uses its long tail for balance while navigating the treetops. Primarily nocturnal, it preys on birds, small mammals and reptiles. Its large canines are reminiscent of big cats, adding to its unique features. Rarely seen due to its stealthy nature and remote habitat, it remains one of the least studied wild cats.

This partly arboreal and terrestrial creature has a varied diet, consuming everything from rodents, small reptiles and insects, to eating plants and fruits. Unlike many other civets, it is more reclusive and seldom seen, making its study challenging. It plays a crucial role in seed dispersal due to its frugivorous habits. The species faces threats from habitat loss and hunting, leading to a Near Threatened status on the IUCN Red List. Its low reproductive rate, with typically one or two young born per litter, further contributes to its vulnerability.

Oriental Bay Owl | Phodilus badius

Found primarily in Southeast Asia, this medium-sized owl is known for its distinct heart-shaped face, which is more pronounced than in other owl species. They inhabit a variety of forest types, including tropical and subtropical lowland forests. Primarily nocturnal, these owls are elusive and often hard to spot in the wild. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, birds, and insects. Unlike many owl species, Oriental Bay Owls have a preference for dense undergrowth, where they roost during the day. They are known for their eerie, high-pitched calls which can be heard at night. The species is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, although habitat destruction poses a significant threat. Their breeding season typically occurs from March to May, during which they lay 3-5 eggs. Adapted for silent flight, their feathers have special structures that reduce noise, aiding in their nocturnal hunting.

The slow loris, a small, nocturnal primate native to Southeast Asia, is known for its unique and charming appearance. One fascinating fact about slow lorises is their venomous bite. They have specialized glands in their elbows that produce a toxin, which they lick and apply to their sharp teeth. This venomous bite is used both for defense against predators and for hunting prey, making them one of the very few primates with such a defensive adaptation. Despite their adorable looks, slow lorises are in fact one of the few venomous mammals in the world.

Lady's veil fungus, scientifically termed Phallus indusiatus, is a captivating mushroom for several reasons. Its striking appearance resembles a delicate skirt, earning it the charming nickname "lady's veil". Remarkably, this mushroom is both a culinary delight in some Asian cuisines, boasting a mild, nutty taste, and a valuable component in traditional Chinese medicine, reputed for its immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties. However, its allure goes beyond human interactions; it has a clever reproductive strategy, emitting a pungent odor that attracts insects, enlisting them as unwitting spore dispersers. In forests around the world, lady's veil fungus contributes to biodiversity by aiding in the decomposition of organic matter, showcasing its multifaceted role in both ecosystems and cultures.
