The crested fireback inhabits lowland forests across the Thai-Malay peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. This medium-sized forest pheasant can reach up to 70 cm in length and is represented by four subspecies, including two in Borneo: the lesser Bornean crested fireback and the greater Bornean crested fireback. Both subspecies are noted for their brown central tail feathers, whitish legs and electric blue facial skin, with males displaying glossy blue-black plumage and females having brown plumage. As omnivores, they feed on fruits, seeds, insects and small invertebrates.

Spotted a marbled cat perched gracefully on a tree in Danum Valley.

This elusive cat, with its striking marbled coat, is a master of camouflage, blending seamlessly into the dense rainforest canopy. Small but agile, it measures around 45-62 cm in body length and uses its long tail for balance while navigating the treetops. Primarily nocturnal, it preys on birds, small mammals and reptiles. Its large canines are reminiscent of big cats, adding to its unique features. Rarely seen due to its stealthy nature and remote habitat, it remains one of the least studied wild cats.

Distinguished by its elongated body and distinctive black bands on a golden-brown coat, Banded Palm Civet, or 𝘏𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴, is a nocturnal mammal native to Southeast Asia, primarily found in Borneo and Sumatra. This partly arboreal and terrestrial creature has a varied diet, consuming everything from rodents, small reptiles and insects, to eating plants and fruits. Unlike many other civets, it is more reclusive and seldom seen, making its study challenging. It plays a crucial role in seed dispersal due to its frugivorous habits. The species faces threats from habitat loss and hunting, leading to a Near Threatened status on the IUCN Red List. Its low reproductive rate, with typically one or two young born per litter, further contributes to its vulnerability.

Oriental Bay Owl | Phodilus badius

Found primarily in Southeast Asia, this medium-sized owl is known for its distinct heart-shaped face, which is more pronounced than in other owl species. They inhabit a variety of forest types, including tropical and subtropical lowland forests. Primarily nocturnal, these owls are elusive and often hard to spot in the wild. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, birds, and insects. Unlike many owl species, Oriental Bay Owls have a preference for dense undergrowth, where they roost during the day. They are known for their eerie, high-pitched calls which can be heard at night. The species is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, although habitat destruction poses a significant threat. Their breeding season typically occurs from March to May, during which they lay 3-5 eggs. Adapted for silent flight, their feathers have special structures that reduce noise, aiding in their nocturnal hunting.

Found in the lush rainforests of Borneo, this Bornean Spiderhunter (Arachnothera everetti) is a medium-sized bird belonging to the Nectariniidae family. Sporting a striking olive-green back and streaked gray underparts, this bird is a master of camouflage as it thrives in lowland and submontane forests along with forest edges. One remarkable feature of this bird is its long, curved bill, perfectly adapted for extracting nectar from flowers, with a particular preference for the blossoms of banana and ginger plants. In addition to its nectar-based diet, these birds are also known to feed on spiders and insects, skillfully using their specialized bills to pluck these prey items from intricately woven webs.
