European Roller (Coracias garrulus) in flight.
Symphony of Sapphire and Emerald

Uncommon to locally fairly common summer migrant to warmer regions, from winter grounds in Africa. Favors open and semiopen country with scattered trees and wooded patches; feeds on larger insects, such as grasshoppers. Mostly seen singly perched on bare snags, wires, and other prominent perches, also on the ground. Spectacular and distinctive: overall brilliant blue.
Current scientific research has shown conclusively that the total number of migratory birds globally has declined significantly in recent years as a direct result of human interference. The charismatic European Roller is one such bird that migrates annually between Eurasia and Africa, and whose numbers are known to be in decline.
