𝗔 𝗝𝗼𝘆𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 #𝗕𝗲𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀

The Gondwana Care Trust, in partnership with One Economy Foundation, recently held a collaborative Christmas Cookout at the Youth Campus in Katutura, Windhoek. The Christmas Cookout is a reflection of the Trust and Foundation’s commitment to community development and care as it provided over 250 attendees with a day of memorable festivities and nourishment. The full-day event featured lively performances by the Choir and Dance Club, a gift hand-out by Gondwana’s Santa Claus, and the serving of a warm cooked meal, fruits, juice, and treats sponsored by the Gondwana Care Trust.

The Youth Campus consists of a Clinical hub, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) centre, and skills centre (currently under construction), along with a soup kitchen, study areas, fitness facilities, and creative spaces for members to utilise. Upon the campus’ launch in September 2023, the Former First Lady of Namibia and Chairperson of the One Economy Foundation, Mrs Monica Geingos, emphasised the campus’ focus on the development and protection of young people. The campus provides a safe and inclusive space for youth aged 13 – 35 to address health concerns, invest in their education, receive psychosocial support, and express their creativity.

As the Trust’s Coordinator, Ms Zipporah Nandjala highlighted: “To our youth - today, we celebrate you. Your excitement, strength, and ability to dream big inspire us, and we encourage you to keep your head up high.” In concluding the day, the Foundation’s Senior Operations Manager, Ms Cherizaan Willemse, further stated the value of collaboration and shared aligned vision between the One Economy Foundation and Gondwana Care Trust, which ultimately empowers communities, uplifts lives, and creates sustainable impact in Namibian communities.

By consolidating partnerships with like-minded organisations, such as the One Economy Foundation, the Gondwana Care Trust amplifies its impact in communities where it is needed most. Through safe havens nourished by these partnerships, communities are afforded opportunities to celebrate one another in unity and thrive amidst life’s challenges.

Gondwana Collection Namibia proudly celebrated the exceptional achievements of its 2024 Go4Gold Academy participants during the final project presentations. Held at The Weinberg Windhoek on Thursday, 28 November 2024, the event marked the conclusion of a year-long leadership development journey.

The Go4Gold Academy, an intensive leadership initiative, combines structured learning with real-world application, equipping participants with the skills to navigate complex challenges and drive meaningful change. Its rigorous structure of six modules and hands-on project is designed to inspire growth, innovation and resilience among Gondwana’s future leaders.

The 11 participants’ presentations showcased measurable results and actionable strategies, reaffirming Gondwana’s position as a pioneer in leadership development within the tourism sector. The projects further emphasised implementation and real-world impact, with participants addressing a range of topics from optimised recourse management to innovative people development plans.

Haingura Pre-Primary School in Windhoek, recently hosted their graduation ceremony, marking a delightful double celebration as the Gondwana Care Trust team delivered the Back-to-School Christmas Bags. Each school bag is packed uniquely and individually according to every child’s age and name, containing essential items such as stationery, reading or colouring books, a sweet treat, toy, canned non-perishable food and hygiene products. It was so lovely to witness so much joy on the children’s faces as they each received their bags.

This project not only rewards children for their achievements but also encourages them to return to school equipped with the necessary supplies to start the new academic year.

One of the Gondwana Collection Namibia values is “Deliver Service Excellence”, which is why the Learning and Development Team continuously implements different training initiatives. With the growth in luxury travel and tourism, as well as Gondwana’s Secret Collection properties increasing, the recent Butler Training offered by SABA International Butler Academy & Training School is particularly timely.

Fifteen Gondwana employees from the regions of Namibia where we have Secret Collection properties – including Desert Whisper (Namib Desert), Namushasha River Villa (Kwando River), The Pearls Beach Pods (Swakopmund), The Weinberg Urban Pod (Windhoek), Reverie Kalahari Pod (Kalahari Desert) and Ekipa Etosha Pod (Etosha National Park) participated in this training, facilitated by Abraham van der Westhuizen and Elize Wiese from the SABA International Butler Academy & Training School.

The training spanned over eight days, and focused on different elements which enabled participants to understand the essence of being a butler. This training focused on personal growth as well as professional skills. The programme is comprised of engaging activities that foster mindfulness, self-care, and a service-oriented mindset, which are key elements for the hospitality industry. The training started with an introduction to the history and philosophy of butler service and interactive sessions that boost confidence and teamwork through fun scenarios. Furthermore, professional ethics, the significance of discretion, and core skills create unforgettable guest experiences.

Once again, here at Gondwana Collection Namibia, The People Team decided to pull out all the stops to make employees feel cared for from head to toe—with a Wellness Day! The ‘fun day’ of sorts, aimed to promote physical, mental, and financial well-being, while giving employees a chance to engage with industry experts.

Mia Healthcare, a pioneer in affordable and inclusive mobile dentistry, provided on-the-spot dental check-ups to coworkers. The day's wellness services did not end there, Namibia Health Plan (NHP) ensured that employees had their vitals examined, including blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol levels, as well as BMI, waist, and hip measurements for a deeper look into personal health and lifestyle risks among others while also providing some guidance on health insurance benefits.

Massage therapists provided brief yet soothing back and neck massages to help relax everyone who participated, meanwhile, the Cancer Association of Namibia educated people on cancer prevention. On the more active side of things, Virgin Active fitness trainers offered advice on the importance of fitness and keeping in great shape, membership plans and overall helped employees flex their options for a healthier lifestyle!

Whether we are tending to Gondwana membership cards, vacation bookings or navigating this fast-paced tourism industry, one thing’s for sure- a healthy life is a happy life and at Gondwana Collection Namibia we believe taking care of yourself can be as rewarding.

What is a Lithop, you ask? Imagine a plant that looks like a colourful and living pebble. These ‘living stones’ are masters of disguise, blending perfectly with the rocky deserts they call home. One of these rare beauties, 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢, has been hiding a big secret for nearly 100 years... until now.

In Gondwana Collection Namibia's vast Canyon Park, a team of determined researchers; Jaan K. Lepson, Peter Beiersdorfer, Hilde Mouton and Frikkie Mouton – tracked down the exact spot where this mysterious plant was first discovered by Kurt Dinter in 1923. Using detailed notes from Dinter’s expedition, they identified the type locality, or original home, of 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢, and their findings are stunning.

At the site, they found a small population of wild 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢 plants that perfectly match Dinter’s descriptions: smooth, pale and immaculate surfaces with no markings. This debunks earlier claims that 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢 was purely a cultivated variety. It’s a natural treasure with unique features that set it apart from its cousins.

𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵?

Type localities are like the birth certificates of species, giving scientists vital clues about their natural history and evolution. Additionally, rediscovering such a rare plant in its original habitat underscores the importance of conserving these fragile ecosystems.

This discovery proves that even in the age of satellites and supercomputers, some of nature’s secrets can only be uncovered through passion, patience and old-school detective work.

In the true spirit of Christmas, the teacher distributed the Back-to-School Christmas Bags to the little ones as they received their pre-school diplomas.
