At Kalahari Anib Lodge, we are thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our dedicated team members who have recently earned their National Vocational Training Certificates at Level 3, accredited by the Namibia Training Authority (NTA).

Among them, Falashishiku Nghidimokanya has excelled in Food and Beverage Services, while Suam Haimbili has showcased her skills in Core Commercial Cookery. We also want to extend our congratulations to Aina Ithana for her accomplishment in Food and Beverage Services, even though she is not featured in the photos here.

These colleagues undertook the NTA’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process, which refers to a comprehensive set of processes designed to evaluate an individual's personal attributes, current competencies, work and life experiences, as well as formal and non-formal learning, against transparent criteria for various purposes. This assessment measures and recognises the knowledge and skills an individual has acquired previously, aligning them with one or more unit standards or components of a qualification. RPL empowers experienced adults to achieve formal qualifications based on their existing knowledge and competencies, acknowledging their prior learning and achievements.

𝗔 𝗦𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺: 𝗔𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻'𝘀 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗞𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗰𝗼

Aldrin “Buzz” Siyama, known as Aldrin, resides in the Kongola area of the Zambezi Region, where he works as a Tour Guide at Namushasha River Lodge. At the beginning of 2023, he took a group of guests on a boat cruise on the Kwando River, where they enjoyed observing various species of wildlife, including birds, crocodiles, hippos, and antelopes. After their stay at the lodge, the guests checked out, concluding a successful outing.

Two months later, the same guests returned and specifically requested Aldrin as their guide once again. Unbeknownst to him, they had a special plan in mind, and he conducted three to four tours for them. Eventually, they proposed an exciting opportunity: an invitation for him to travel to Mexico to act in a film titled "𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘢𝘣𝘣𝘪𝘵 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘦," which is currently available to watch on Netflix.

After receiving his passport, Aldrin flew to South Africa for a visa interview, which he successfully passed. A week later, he returned to Namibia before embarking on a journey to Frankfurt, Germany and then eventually to Mexico, arriving at his hotel, Camino Real Guadalajara, in Jalisco on the same night. His time in Mexico was filled with positive experiences, and he thoroughly enjoyed the adventure.

Aldrin's journey serves as evidence of the significance of maintaining a cheerful demeanour while working, as one never knows what opportunities may arise from the guests with whom one interacts. He expresses gratitude for the experiences he has had and cherishes it all.

𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝘁𝗼𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲

Recently, the Etosha King Nehale Team had the honour of hosting the Traditional Leaders of the King Nehale Conservancy, which included 17 headmen and headwomen, along with the Conservancy Chairperson and his secretary. This gathering was a unique opportunity for these leaders to experience the beauty of the Ontalelo Outpost, a private waterhole within Etosha National Park, and enjoy a delightful lunch at our lodge.

The visit underscores our commitment to fostering connections between the lodge and the local community. By inviting the traditional leaders to experience our facilities firsthand, we aim to familiarise them with the tourism and hospitality services we offer. This initiative not only strengthens our relationship with the community but also highlights the importance of collaboration in promoting sustainable tourism that benefits everyone involved.

At Etosha King Nehale, we believe that the lodge serves as a bridge between the natural wonders of Etosha and the rich cultural heritage of the Aawambo people. We are dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where local communities can engage with and benefit from the tourism industry.

𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗮

Gys Joubert's story is one of commitment, compassion, and a deep-rooted belief in the power of community. As a trustee of the Gondwana Care Trust, he has dedicated himself to creating sustainable impacts for Namibian communities, a mission that resonates deeply with his personal values and professional journey.

𝗔 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗻

Born and raised in Namibia, Gys' path began with a solid educational foundation. He studied law in South Africa and practiced in the legal field before transitioning into banking, where he spent nearly a decade. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to private business brokering, but it was his role as Managing Director of Gondwana Collection Namibia, which he took on in January 2017, that would intertwine his journey with the Gondwana Care Trust.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁

Gys' involvement with the Gondwana Care Trust coincided with his tenure at Gondwana. He discovered an inspiring initiative led by a group of female employees, ‘Gondwana Memes’ who pooled their personal resources to support community projects. Recognising the potential for a more structured approach, the team formalised this initiative into the Gondwana Care Trust in September 2017. This move not only provided transparency but also allowed for greater resource allocation to those in need.

𝗔 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀

Gys attributes his passion for community service to his upbringing, where helping others was a fundamental value instilled by his parents. This ethos aligns perfectly with Gondwana's culture of giving and serving. He believes that exposure to the realities faced by disadvantaged communities inspires gratitude and a desire to serve, a lesson he aims to pass on to his children.

𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀

Among the many rewarding experiences Gys has had since joining the Trust, one stands out: a visit to the DRC Women Community Centre and Grow Together Kindergarten in Swakopmund, shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic. Witnessing the resilience and hope of children in a community devastated by the pandemic's economic impact was a profound moment for him. Despite the challenges, the children's smiles and positivity reinforced Gys' commitment to the Trust's mission.

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲

The Gondwana Care Trust faces significant challenges, primarily the overwhelming need for support compared to available resources. Gys emphasises the importance of focusing on community impact rather than individual assistance, a principle that guides their efforts. The Trust's ability to adapt and thrive during difficult times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, is an indication of the goodwill of the Namibian community and corporate partners who rallied to support their initiatives.

𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱

Gys envisions a future where the Gondwana Care Trust's services may no longer be necessary, indicating a society where needs are met, and communities thrive independently. This dream, while ambitious, reflects his unwavering hope for Namibia and its people.

“Leadership Academy is a journey to yourself, to understand the guidelines, to understand the history of Gondwana.” - Ume Goldbeck (Team Trainer & Leadership Coach)

The Leadership Academy Program at Gondwana Collection Namibia is a comprehensive 10-day training initiative tailored for Gondwanians in supervisory or assistant management roles. This programme aims to equip participants with essential human and business skills crucial for effective team leadership and management, while also deepening their understanding of Gondwana's rich history, core business principles, and guidelines.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

The training is divided into two distinct segments, each lasting five days, with a three-month interval in between. This break is strategically designed to allow participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge through an on-the-job project at their workplaces. Such an approach not only reinforces learning but also enhances practical skills in real-world settings.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

Gondwana Collection Namibia demonstrates a strong commitment to team development, as reflected in the establishment of the Gondwana Training Academy in 2015. This academy aims to promote service excellence, positioning Namibia as a premier tourist destination. It offers various training opportunities, including in-house programmes at different properties, focusing on both professional skills and essential soft skills such as leadership and communication.

On the final day of the 10-day training, each participant drew a name earlier in the week, and had the opportunity to share something positive about the individual they had drawn. They shared touching moments, interspersed with humorous anecdotes. Toward the end of this final session, each participant answered two questions: What was your eye-opening moment? And what learning will you implement at work?

The general consensus for learnings to implement included: inclusivity in decision-making, adapting to changing work environments, growing together as a team, and leaving a legacy. Eye-opening moments shared included: the importance of giving oneself a break, the idea that "we are all coffee beans blended together to make the best cup of coffee," and the understanding that one doesn’t always have to be an outspoken leader; quiet, shy, yet observant leaders can also be exceptional, akin to the leopard. And finally, discovering oneself is often a challenging journey.

Nakayale Private Academy is more than just a school; it is an incubator of hope in a region where opportunities for education and growth are scarce. The word ‘Nakayale,’ meaning ‘nest,’ encapsulates what this school represents to its learners—a place of safety, nurturing, and support. For the children, Nakayale is not only an educational institution; it is their lifeline and sanctuary in a world that often overlooks their needs and potential.

Located in Etunda, in the Omusati Region of Namibia, Nakayale Private Academy for Orphans and Marginalised Children opened its doors in January 2016 with an initial enrollment of 60 learners. The school offers free tuition and boarding on 50 hectares of land donated by the Western Diocese of ELCIN.

𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁

Nakayale Private Academy not only transforms the lives of its learners but also inspires communities and families through the significant changes observed in the children. The academy is developing a credible, internationally recognised model for educating marginalised children in rural Namibia, demonstrating proven success. This model includes on-the-job training for teachers without formal qualifications, while also assisting them in obtaining formal teaching credentials, thereby challenging perceptions about educational barriers in rural areas.

𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀

B2Gold Namibia has supported the school, ensuring that the first intake of children graduated from primary school to high school in December 2021. This video specifically highlights B2Gold Namibia’s involvement with Nakayale Private Academy, as they have been an investor since its inception. With continued financial support from B2Gold Namibia, Carmen de Villiers (Director of Nakayale Private Academy) and her team secured places for the first fifteen children at Karstveld Private Academy in Grootfontein. By the end of their ninth year in 2023, all learners maintained an average of 70% to 90%, with the top 9th-grade learner among those from Nakayale Private Academy. Nakayale, with its proven pathway to a sustainable future and a life of excellence, is thriving thanks to the financial and moral support of investors such as B2Gold Namibia, CMB TECH, Westair Aviation, FNB Namibia, and the Rössing Foundation. These children are poised to change the narrative of their origins and the educational landscape in their region.

The collaboration between Romantik® AG and Gondwana Collection Namibia has flourished over the years as a marketing partnership, focusing on joint marketing initiatives and volunteer exchanges. This partnership recently expanded with a new hospitality internship opportunity for Gondwana employees at the Romantik® Hotel Gasthaus Rottner in Nuremberg, Germany.

From June to August 2024, Romantik® Hotel Gasthaus Rottner hosted a three-month Food & Beverage (F&B) service internship. This programme aims to provide hands-on experience in the hospitality field, allowing interns to immerse themselves in the operations of this esteemed hotel, known for its blend of traditional Franconian cuisine and modern hospitality standards.

𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦𝘥 𝘌𝘹𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦

In a significant development, Nina Braun from Romantik® Hotel Gasthaus Rottner joined the Gondwana Collection Namibia Brand and Marketing Team for an internship in 2023. This initiative was organised by the Rottner family in collaboration with the Romantik® Group. Upon her return, Nina was determined to create similar opportunities for her Namibian colleagues at Gondwana. With the enthusiastic support of the Rottner family and her own dedication, this project came to fruition. Nina’s placement highlighted the ongoing commitment to fostering cross-cultural exchanges and professional development within the hospitality sector.

In 2024, the partnership facilitated the travel of Christa-Marie Swanepoel, Assistant Lodge Manager at Damara Mopane Lodge, and Algernon van Wyk, Floor Supervisor at Canyon Lodge, from Gondwana Collection Namibia to Germany for hospitality internships, where they are worked alongside the team at Romantik® Hotel Gasthaus Rottner. Concurrently, Kaja Danzer from Romantik® Hotel Achterdiek participated in a hospitality internship at Namib Desert Lodge, one of the Gondwana properties.

Khaibaisen Community Centre, situated in Okahandja, is a remarkable initiative endorsed by Global United that plays a vital role in the community by providing daily meals to many children. This feeding scheme not only addresses hunger but also fosters a nurturing environment for young minds through its kindergarten program.

As one of the Gondwana Care Trust supported projects, the centre receives support through the MealForTwo Project, which helps sustain its operations and ensures that children have access to nutritious food. The centre also benefits from community contributions that provide necessary supplies, such as cleaning products, to maintain a healthy and safe environment for the children.

Moreover, Khaibaisen Community Centre is proud to be a beneficiary of the Back-to-School Christmas Bag Project, which further enhances the educational experience for the children by supplying them with essential school supplies. Through these combined efforts, the centre continues to make a significant impact on the lives of children and families in the Okahandja community.

The MealForTwo Project addresses the urgent issue of food insecurity in our communities. Through strategic partnerships with local organisations and soup kitchens, the trust distributes essential food supplies to those who need it most.

In just the first three months of 2024, the trust provided an incredible 52,500 meals to over 5,000 individuals, thanks to dedicated partners. Each meal shared represents hope and solidarity.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗮: 𝗔 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

In the northern reaches of Germany, where charming villages and lush greenery abound, Kaja Danzer discovered her passion for the vibrant world of hospitality. She hails from the small island of Juist, located in the North Sea off the northern coast of Germany. Growing up in this picturesque region, Kaja developed a keen interest in economics and tourism—fields that would shape her future. The allure of tourism captivated her, offering incredible opportunities to travel, meet new people, and create unforgettable experiences.

Kaja's journey into the hospitality industry took a significant turn when she was introduced to Gondwana Collection Namibia through Romantik AG, Gondwana's marketing partner in Europe. During a presentation, she had the pleasure of meeting Manni Goldbeck, the Brand and Marketing Director at Gondwana. His enthusiasm for the lodges and their various projects left a lasting impression on Kaja. Inspired by the depth of Gondwana's work, she eagerly sought to join their dynamic team as a Hospitality Intern for a three-month period.

Now, as she interns at Namib Desert Lodge, her experience has been amazing as she also takes on roles at The Desert Grace, Desert Whisper and Namib Dune Star Camp. The team welcomed Kaja with open arms, making her feel right at home. She enjoys working alongside supportive colleagues, and the flexibility of her role allows her to engage in various capacities, from reception to restaurant and office duties. This diversity has not only enhanced her skills but also provided her with the chance to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Namibia during her time there.

One of the most striking cultural differences she has noticed since arriving in Namibia is how people unwind after work. While the work environment shares similarities with what she is accustomed to—characterised by mutual respect and warmth—the local customs of relaxation and socialising offer a unique glimpse into Namibia's vibrant culture.

It's that time of year again when the Gondwana Care Trust is preparing to pack the Back-to-School Christmas Bags. Over the past two weeks, the Gondwana team and guests visiting our various lodges across the country have come together to write unique Christmas cards for each child, which will be included in every bag.

In 2023, the Back-to-School Christmas Bag Project provided 3,269 bags filled with essential educational items, hygiene products, food supplies, sweet treats, and toys tailored to each child's age, benefiting disadvantaged children across 48 schools in Namibia. This year, the trust aims to reach 5,000 children. This initiative not only rewards learners for their hard work but also encourages them to return to school equipped for success.

With the generous support of partners and individuals in Namibia and beyond, the trust is making a significant difference in the lives of children, even in the most rural communities.

As Namibia commemorates Heroes Day on 26 August, we honour those who fought tirelessly for our freedom and laid the groundwork for our nation’s prosperity. This day marks a significant moment in our history. It is an occasion to remember the sacrifices that brought us independence.

We at Gondwana Collection Namibia are particularly excited to reflect on how this liberty has shaped the Namibia we know today, as well as its effects on the ever-growing nature of the sector. The journey to independence was long and tough. Namibia’s struggle for freedom was marked by key events, such as the formation of various resistance groups.

On 21 March 1990, Namibia finally achieved independence. The adoption of the Namibian Constitution on this day marked the beginning of a new era, one where the country could govern itself, set its own priorities and build a future rooted in freedom, justice and equality.

The Namibian Constitution is more than just a legal document; it is evidence to the values and aspirations of a newly independent nation. Chapter 11 of the Constitution specifically highlights the importance of the environment and sustainable development, laying the foundation for Namibia’s commitment to conservation, a key pillar of its tourism industry.

Article 95 of the Constitution emphasises the need to maintain ecosystems, essential ecological processes and biological diversity, which directly supports the sustainable use of natural resources. This commitment to conservation has allowed Namibia to develop a tourism sector that not only showcases its natural beauty, but also ensures resources are preserved for future generations.

LODGE MANAGER

The Position:
Exercise leadership skills to supervise staff on behalf of lodge management. Overseeing and guiding overall operations of the lodge and exercising leadership skills to supervise staff on behalf of lodge management and be knowledgeable in assisting with administrative duties. Knowledge of the various lodge operation departments to assist and organise staff during the working day when necessary. Coordinates and delegates the management team and ensures operational effectiveness and efficiency.

Scope and General Purpose:
• Recognize the Gondwana Philosophy regarding people, finance and natural resource management as guidelines for your decisions.
• Ensure that all necessary administrative structures are in place to work within the margins of the yearly budget and fulfil the requirements of accounting, labour regulations, human resources, and operations.
• Organize and supervise all lodge staff so that they exercise their duties and responsibilities in a dedicated and productive way and perform as a team.
• Support staff in becoming the best they can be, according to their abilities as per company guidelines and policies.
• Act sensibly and responsibly regarding health, safety, and staff grievances in emergencies and situations of crisis.
• Ensure the lodge is fully operational within its operating budget and that the year-end result is economical.


Competencies required:
• A passion to host our guests
• Fluent in English. Afrikaans and German will be an advantage
• Minimum 5 years experience in Lodge Management or Hospitality Management
• Skilled in planning and organisation with a mind to the future
• Ability to mentor and train staff
• Education background in the field of Hospitality Studies will be an added advantage
• Logistical planning ability
• Business oriented
• Ability to analyse and control costs, losses, etc.
• Have excellent time-management skills
• Food & Beverage experience, including cost and stock control, will be advantageous
• Administration and Guest Relations experience
• Passion for the Environment and ability to monitor an Environmental Management Plan
• Computer Skills (Experience in Innkeeper, Microsoft Office, and Timeware systems will be an advantage)
• Technical background in property maintenance will be an advantage
• Must be a proven team player
