OLDEST CANOE IN AFRICA AND SECOND OLDEST IN THE WORLD - THE DUFUNA CANOE
8000 years ago, Nigeria. โAfricaโs oldest known boatโ the Dufuna Canoe was discovered near the region of the River Yobe. The Canoe was discovered by a Fulani herdsman in May 1987, in Dufuna Village while digging a well. The canoeโs โalmost black woodโ, said to be African mahogany, as โentirely an organic materialโ. Various Radio-Carbon tests conducted in laboratories of reputable Universities in Europe and America indicate that the Canoe is over 8000 years old, thus making it the oldest in Africa and 2nd oldest in the World. Little is known of the period to which the boat belongs, in archaeological terms it is described as an early phase of the Later Stone Age, which began rather more than 12,000 years ago and ended with the appearance of pottery.
The lab results redefined the pre-history of African water transport, ranking the Dufuna canoe as the worldโs 2nd oldest known dugout. Older than it is the dugout from Pesse, Netherlands. But evidence of an 8,000-year-old tradition of boat building in Africa throws cold water on the assumption that maritime transport developed much later there in comparison with Europe. Peter Breunig of the University of Frankfurt, Germany, an archaeologist involved in the project, says the canoeโs age โforces a reconsideration of Africaโs role in the history of water transportโ. It shows, he adds, โthat the cultural history of Africa was not determined by Near Eastern and European influences but took its own, in many cases parallel, courseโ. Breunig, adding that it even outranks in style European finds of similar age. According to him, โThe bow and stern are both carefully worked to points, giving the boat a notably more elegant formโ, compared to โthe dugout made of conifer wood from Pesse in the Netherlands, whose blunt ends and thick sides seem crudeโ. To go by its stylistic sophistication, he reasons, โIt is highly probable that the Dufuna boat does not repres
KOGI STATE
Kogi is a state in the north central zone of Nigeria. It is popularly called the confluence state due to the fact that the confluence of Rivers Niger and Benue occurs there. Its capital is Lokoja. There are three main Ethnic groups in the Kogi namely Igala, Ebira and Okun and the people are mostly Hausas and Yorubas with the Igalas being the largest ethnic group in the State. The majority of the people of the state are farmers.
There are many mineral resources in Kogi, including Iron, Petroleum and Tinand richly blessed with Coal which is found in Okaba, Ogboyaga and Koton-Karte. Limestone and Marble are found in Ajaokuta (The nation'e premier iron and steel complex), Jakura, Osolo, Osara, while Casseterite, Columbite and Tantalite are found in Egbe. Gold is also found in Isanlu in East Yangba area while Iron ore can be found at Itakpe Okene.
Mount Patti is a hill in the center of a town called Lokoja in central Nigeria. A town where the river Benue and the longest river in Nigeria, River Niger, meet and both flow as one. Itโs about 3hours drive to Abuja Nigeriaโs capital. Itโs about 20minutes drive from the city center and about 10minutes drive from the mount Patti foot with a lot of sharp, twists and turns along the road. Mount Patti has a fantastic height of about 458.3metres above sea-level with about 15 square kilometers in land mass. The sight from the top of Mount Patti is a must see for every visitor. It gives a unique and aerial view of the town, the confluences of the river Niger and Benue and of course the sunrise if you are an early bird if not the sunset. Who knows you may be lucky to see some monkeys.
You can have a good view of the confluence and the City of Lokoja from the top, The first house/ office of Lord Lugard is sitted on the hill.
To the people of Lokoja, Mount Patti means different things to them. Some donโt see it as any thing, while to some it reminds them of how it protected their forefathers during the days of inter-tribal war. Many of them flee from their houses to the hill for safety. Others see Mount Patti as a mystery considering its natural spring scattered round the hills, the thick forest, wild life and the land mark which many have turned into their farm lands and hunting ground for hunters to hunt for animals.
ROYAL NIGER COMPANY FLAG
The Royal Niger flag was lowered for the first time in Nigeria at this spot.
THE CONFLUENCE OF RIVERS NIGER & BENUE
River Niger remained a marvel to the Europeans until John and Richard Landers passed through the confluence on October 25th 1830, completing the journey that Mungo Park had started. Rivers Niger and Benue are the two largest rivers in West Africa.
The two rivers meet at Lokoja forming a Y-shaped structure and draining southwards into the ocean.. While River Niger is brownish in colour, River Benue is light green in colour.
Fishing is carried on extensively on the rivers. There are ferry and boat services plus cruising facilities within view of the confluence. Reserves elsewhere in the World.
The sole aim is to make it a pleasurable delight to visitors, both foreign and local, thus boosting the tourism industry, the economy and the level of social interaction in the state
EUROPEAN COLONIAL CEMENTARIES
The Biggest European cementary in Nigeria with remains of European soldiers of the West African Frontier Force (WAFF) in Lokoja until 1926 and those of European missionaries. Some of the tomb stones in the cementaries date as far back as 1867.
The structure is in bad shape and Nigerian government has a lot to do in the Tourism industry.

In Lokoja, because of its location near the banks of River Niger, was an important centre for slave trade during the era of slavery in Nigeria. Also because of its strategic location, Lokoja aroused a great deal of interest in the European explorers and missionaries in the early 19th century, and it soon became a commercial post of European merchants and missionaries. Hence, when the British government started to wage war against slave trade, Lokoja became a collection centre for slaves seized from slave merchants to be consequently set free.
The spot where such slave were freed was marked with a piece of Iron Pole now referred to as the 'IRON OF LIBERTY'. This crusade was championed by the late Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther.
