On May 27th, the Adisa family decided to celebrate the first birthday of their daughter,Adejoke at Aafin Ilu, a cultural art center known for its rich heritage and vibrant atmosphere.

The birthday celebration was filled with joy and excitement as her friends and family gathered to mark this special occasion. The birthday girl was fascinated by the display of traditional drums at Aafin Ilu and spent a lot of time exploring, admiring and touching them.

Her older brothers were by her side, helping her enjoy the moment and making the day even more memorable for her.

It was really a celebration that will create lasting memories for the Adisa family. We appreciate them for allowing us to host their celebration.

Oba Adetoyese Laoye, In front of his Palace at Ede (Western Nigeria) in honor of the American Study Group visiting him at his Palace. Date: 09-27-1962.

Oba Adetoyese Laoye was an expert who could use the talking drum, to communicate with people. He was a dancer, drummer, musicologist, teacher, poet, storyteller, communicator, pianist, Yoruba cultural icon and trained pharmacist. It is doubtful to talk of the talking drum in African culture, without mentioning the name of Timi Adetoyese Laoye, whose dual status as a king and a drummer, brought him instant fame and applause all over the world.

Oba John Adetoyese Laoye was born on the 21st of February 1899, the great-great grandson of Timi Bamigbaye Ajeniju, who was the second Timi to reign in present Ede. Ede is one of the older towns in Yoruba land and traditionally said to have been founded by Timi Agbale around 1500. Agbale was a hunter and a war lord, sent by the Alaafin of Old Oyo Empire to establish a settlement, to protect the Oyo caravan routes to Benin and the coast.

Oba Adetoyese was also a descendant of a family of drummers in Ede, from where he inherited and honed his skill in the art of drumming, through his maternal uncle. He was born to Muslim parents – Oyebisi Omolaoye and Madam Moware Odefunke. Oyebisi was a scion of the Ajeniju royal family and a Togo based prosperous trader.

Olórun ní somo

Ayoka Foyeke Ajangila began her recording career with Decca in Lagos in June 1961. Her musical journey extended from the 1950s through the 1980s.

Hailing from Ibadan, she embarked on a European tour with Hubert Ogunde in 1979. Ajangila marked the safe delivery of her first child by releasing a beautiful album titled "Olórun ní somo".

Coming from a family deeply rooted in Sango and Egungun traditions, Ajangila's music, classified as "Pankenke" in the 1970s and 1980s Yoruba musical culture, featured a rich ensemble of data drums.

Today, our knowledge about Ajangila is scant, not because she didn't leave a significant mark, but because cultural memory and knowledge production have historically favored male voices over women.

Thanks to digital technology, Ajangila's voice, brimming with energy, elegance, and beauty, still resonates. Her album commemorated the triumph over the struggle with childlessness.

Daddy Showkey 💜👑

The king of late 1990s Naija music

John Odafe Asiemo, otherwise known as DADDY Showkey was born to Isoko parents in Delta state. He grew up in the ghetto parts of Ajegunle. He was a big music hit in the 90s He is mostly associated with the ghetto singers in Ajegunle such as Baba Fryo.

He got his nickname through his grandmother’s elder sister’s son who was popularly known as Showboy . Showboy brought him up, so, he had to adopt the name, “Showkid” as a child. But as he grew older, his friends changed it to “Showkey”.
The “Galala King” was the first artist to start the Nigerian Dancehall style. Instead of using the Jamaican patois, Daddy Showkey decided to use Pidgin English for his music and invented a dance style that changed the Nigerian dancehall scene. Showkey famous hit are "Diana", Somebody Call my name" Fire Fire, One day and so on

Baba Sala: Moses Olaiya(18 May 1936 – 7 October 2018), was a Nigerian comedian, dramatist, and actor.

Olaiya was born in Ilesha, Southwest Nigeria, he was raised in colonial Nigeria and grew up in the Northern provinces. His father worked as a teacher and later as an accountant and the family moved quite often, living in Jos and Kano. As a young boy, Olaiya played the class clown and sometimes dressed outlandishly to please people. While he chose to develop a career in entertainment his parents wanted a path that will lead to a professional career such as in medicine or law.

Olaiya worked as a health inspector for the Lagos City Council but as a young man with interest in entertainment, he formed musical group, the Federal Rhythm Dandies which had a young Sunny Ade as a member. The group played briefly before Olaiya switched from music to drama, he wrote and staged dramatic plays similar to the style crafted by the forerunners of genre, Ogunde and Ladipo.
However, seeking to do something new, he dabbled into comedy and founded Alawada group. In 1965, the group got a break when it won a contest organized by Western Nigeria Television that led to the creation of a t.v. show. The group became more known when their comedy sketches were aired on WNTV. Olaiya's main character in the group was Baba Sala, a pensioner who sometimes wore torn and out sized trousers and a table clock as a wrist watch.

In 1982, Olaiya made his big screen debut in Ọ̀run Móoru directed by Ola Balogun and co-produced by Olaiya. He plays his signature character Baba Sala, a man from a poor background who had built some wealth selling electronics in the city only to lose it to greed assisted by the advice of a dubious babalawo.
The movie was well received but was bootlegged which affected box office receipts. Olaiya then directed and produced his next film, Aare Agbaye in 1983.

Baba Sala's third film Mosebolatan was directed by Ade Folayan with Tunde Kelani as cinematographer. The movie was artistically and financially successful. In the 1990s, Olaiya dabbled into the home video market with Agba Man and Return Match two slapstick comedies which lack the technical qualities of his early films.

In October 2018, Baba Sala died of what was referred by his media aide as "old-age related sickness".

After his death, Best of Nollywood Magazine announced that the category "comedy of the year" will now be known as "Moses Adejumo Comedy of the Year" to honour him for his contribution to the industry.

Some of his movies were;

Orun Mooru (1982)

Aare Agbaye (1983)

Mosebolatan (1985)

Obee Gbona (1989)

Diamond (1990 Home video )

Agba Man (1992, Home Video)

Return Match (1993, Home Video)

Ana Gomina (1996, home video, )

Tokunbo (1985, TV)

The beautiful and brilliant students of Al furqon group of school Ede. on a tour of Aafin ilu, Aafin Ilu situated in Ede, Osun State. No tour of an art centre in Osun state could be complete without a visit to the Ààfin Ìlù (Palace of Drum), a place they wanted to experience for themselves.

The students were greeted by CEO and Founder, Prince Adewale Laoye (Drummer of Peace). He began the program using the Talking Drum to say " Ekaabo Se Daadaa Le De", a processional number in which Prince Laoye made the Talking Drum speak, as a human being would speak, greeting its guests in its own words, "How was your arrival? Hope there were no problems on your way here, and be assured there will be no problems on your way back." Performances and activities included lectures and demonstrations on different types of drums, followed by a brief question and answer period.

Afterwards, the students were lectured about the Timi Agbale Olofa'na of Ede. Prince Laoye narrated the story of the Drummer king, who is also the late Timi of Ede, Oba John Adetoyese Laoye.

The students enjoyed the lectures and demonstrations. They did not realize that Yoruba drummers can make the drums speak and sing! Prince Laoye then used his Talking Drum to sing a Yoruba folk song, "Babalawo Mo Wa Bebe" and English song"Johnbull my son" He also made the drum call their names and recite the names of past Timis of Ede, and even the name of the former President of Nigeria. They were amazed!

The excursion culminated with a short lecture on the origins of Yoruba drums and their various uses. They then learned and sang Yoruba folk songs, and danced to the music of the Dundun drum rhythm. They did not want Prince Laoye to stop! The students very much enjoyed their visit, and a great time was had by all.

Ààfin Ìlù is a MUST SEE tourism destination in Ede, Osun State. We invite each and everyone to come visit us and learn more about Yoruba music, dance, culture and the amazing historical background of the many different sets of Yoruba drums. Like we always say, Ààfin Ìlù Awaits You!
