The Origin of 'Mammy Markets' in Nigerian Army Barracks
What is now known as"Mammy Market" in all barracks nationwide, came to be as a result of the industry of Mrs Anthony Ochefu. Thanks to an Idoma local brew called "enyi". Now, nobody remembers to recognise this history maker and accord the honour due to her.

In 1959, Mammy Ode, a young girl from Jericho-Ugboju in the present Otukpo local government area of Benue state was married to Anthony Aboki Ochefu, a young non-commissioned military officer who had just been posted to Enugu from Abeokuta.

They were quartered at the Army Barracks, Abakpa, Enugu. To beat idleness and perhaps earn some money to support her young family, Mrs Mammy Ochefu established a business of selling soft drinks. She also prepared gruel, which is popularly called 'Umu or enyi' in Idoma, or kunu in Hausa, for sale to the soldiers in the barrack to help quench their thirst and energise them.

She soon became popular with selling "umu" as soldiers trooped to her house to buy the local brew made from guinea corn. Some of her customers were officers, who always send their batmen to buy the gruel for them, Monday through Friday and even during the weekend when they are not working.

Somehow, one of the non-commissioned officers, the RSM, did not flow with the enthusiasm, which Mammy’s gruel generated among other military men in the barracks. He complained that the stuff was attracting flies into the barracks and ordered Mrs Mammy Ochefu to stop its production and sale.

Though disappointed at the order of the RSM, she stopped the production and sale of "umu" in the barrack. For weeks, Mrs Mammy Ochefu agonized over the fate of her business, just as officers and men of the Nigerian Army who enjoyed her brew because of its freshness and nutritional value lamented over the situation.

From several quarters, pressure mounted on the RSM for a reversal of the order. After a while, he succumbed to and directed that a section of the barrack be reserved for Mrs. Mammy Ochefu to produce and sell her "umu".

Her joy knew no bound few days after a section of the barracks was allocated to her for the purpose of selling the Idoma local brew within the barrack. She built a small stall for her business and soon, her business began to boom. Most of her customers booked far in advance for the quantity of "umu" they want to buy. Before noon, she would have finished selling the available "umu" for the day.

Soon, other women in the barracks became inspired by her industrious nature and tapped into her industry and started selling other items like burukutu, pito, palm wine, kain-kain and other alcoholic beverages in addition to pepper soup and other delights for the relaxation of the rant and file in the evenings when they close from work and they are permitted to drink alcoholic beverages.

It was not long before that portion of the barracks became known as mammy market. It also became a policy to establish markets inside or near military barracks in the country, initially for the exclusive use of officers and men of the rank and file.
Today, no visit to Abuja, the Federal Capital City, is complete without a taste of fresh fish in one of the mammy markets, especially the one attached to Abacha Barrack. Similar markets attached to paramilitary barracks are also called mammy markets.

After General Yakubu Gowon was overthrown in a military putsch, Anthony Aboki Ochefu, then a Colonel, was posted to East Central state as military governor. So Mrs Mammy Ochefu and her husband returned to Enugu as the first family. As first lady, Mammy Ochefu visits the site where mammy market started about sixteen years earlier.

It must also be stressed too that in retirement, Colonel Anthony Aboki Ochefu and his wife incorporated a company called Mammy Markets, which was into haulage and trading.

Mrs Mammy Ochefu is alive and lives at Otukpo as one of the prized legends of our time.

Major General Kaleosho (rtd) has written on the origin of the name mammy markets in Nigerian Army Barracks.

Mbari Cultural & Art Centre, Owerri

Mbari is a traditional arts and crafts center retained by the Imo State council for Arts and Culture. Situated at Ikenegbu in Central Owerri, Mbari, it is an open air museum that houses monumental arts depicting the culture, tradition and history of the Igbo people.

Sometimes referred to as the ‘house of gods’, it is a huge tourist attraction. Although Mbari is a monumental art sacrifice to “ALA” the earth goodness, it also shelters artistic representations – artifacts as well as sculptures- which tell of the prevalent social life of the Igbos and images of other prominent deities that inhabit the traditional Igbo cosmic system. These deities include Amadioha (the god of thunder), Ogwugwu (the god of the forest), Nwaorie (the goddess of Nwaorie River), Ahiajoku (the god of harvest), etc. Closely attached to each deity are images of animals such as monkeys, tortoise, rams, snakes and owls, believed to represent errand spirits or mystical messengers of the deities.

There are also images of Ikoro, the Igbo traditional instrument for communicating messages; unfamiliar creatures such as the ostrich (Enyi Nnunu); a certain tall figure representing Alakuko, allegedly the tallest man in Igboland; ‘Onye afo toro’, a man whose stomach
became bloated because he committed an abomination against Ala, etc Contrary to general assumption, Mbari Cultural Center is neither a centre for idol worship nor an idol in itself. It is an art form that has its origin very deep in Igbo cultural and religious beliefs and practices. The Mabari cultural centre is a three dimensional cultural facility, made up of the Mbari House, Mbari Museum Kitchen and an amphitheatre, and definitely a must-see location.

Oguta Lake, Oguta

Oguta Lake is the largest natural lake in Imo State and it is originated from a natural depression.

The lake is of immense value to the people of Oguta, Orsu, Nkwesi and Awo. In the colonial era, the Oguta Lake was a port for the evacuation of palm products and the relics of the jetties used
by the United African Company (U. A. C.) still exist today. During the civil war, the Oguta Lake was a marine base for the Biafran Navy. Visitors can take a cruise on the lake or play a round of
golf on the 18-hole course on the bank of the lake.

Iheneke Lake

Iheneke Lake is a fresh water lake covering an area of about 5sq.km, and it is surrounded mainly by bamboo trees and other flora species. It is a tropical lake with maximum density during the warmest season. During the rainy season, the lake is cold and then cools further as the harmattan advances. It is a lovely place for relaxation. Among the faunas found in and around the lake are Pythons, Guinea fowls and Crocodiles. It is locally believed that
mermaid spirits appear in the lake at intervals. However, the movement of the lake can hold tourists spellbound as its direction changes periodically; thus, in the morning the lake flows downwards, at noon it flows upwards and at sundown it becomes stagnant. The sacred laws that govern the Ezeagu tourist complex are; female should not enter Ihu-ogba cave on trousers and pants, widow does not enter Ihu-ogba cave, Ihuneke Lake or Ogbagada waterfall when she is still mourning her husband. And also people are forbidden to make loud noise close to and/or near the fall because it increases its noise to a frightening height when there is external noise by human beings etc.

IGBO- UKWU BRONZE POT

The Archaeology of Igbo-Ukwu has been revealed in bronzes dating from the 9th century A.D., which was discovered during excavations by Thurstan Shaw and his team in 1959 and 1964 in Igbo-Ukwu, Augata local government area of Anambra State. A total of three sites was excavated, they are: Isiah Anozie (called Igbo-Isiah), Richard Anozie (Igbo-Richard), Jonah Anozie (Igbo-Jonah) revealing bronze artifacts along with pottery and thousands
of glass beads, materials demonstrating trade with such distant cultures as the Egyptians.

These bronze artifacts had been made by Igbo Ukwu& #39;s ancient residents from local copper and other materials. They have been confirmed as the first people in West Africa to work copper and its alloys, centuries before other cultures. The objects are culturally connected with those of the Igbo, and related to those of the Nri-Igbo.
