UK new Visa rules and how it affects Nigerians, other immigrants

The UK government on Monday took a bold step in curbing the spate of immigration into the country by announcing stricter visa rules.

A statement issued by the Home Office said the new plan to slash migration levels will deliver the biggest-ever reduction in the country’s net migration.

Interior Secretary, James Cleverly, said his plan would result in 300,000 fewer people coming to the UK in the coming years.

The development, in its wake, gathered massive reactions with anxiety expressed over what it portends to migration plans to the UK.

In the latest figures by the UK Office of National Statistics, Nigeria is ranked number 2, accounting for 141,000, in the non-EU nationalities that have arrived in the UK in the last one year.

Others include Chinese, Pakistani, Ukrainian and others.

Here are, however, the new changes in the visa rules aimed at curbing immigration into the UK:

1. Minimum salary spike for skilled workers visa.
The £26,000 minimum wage criterion has been raised to £38,700 in order to qualify for a skilled worker visa. This is a 50% rise.

2. Health and Care Visa
In order to meet the NHS staffing needs, health and social care visas will be exempt from the new, higher criterion. However, caregivers won’t be permitted to bring their dependents any more.

3. Shortage Occupation List
The government says it will also review the occupation shortage list and reduce the number of occupations on it. A “shortage occupation list” exists to help employers fill certain roles. These positions have a lower wage requirement, which makes it simpler for candidates to accrue the points needed to be granted a visa. This is about to change because of the new policy, which does away with the 20% minimum pay cut that was previously provided to applicants for visas in shortage occupations.

4. Family Visa
The minimum amount needed to obtain a family visa will rise from £18,600 to £38,700.

5. Student Visa
The Migration Advisory Committee has been asked by the government to review the graduate route. Therefore, it is anticipated that adjustments to the Students Visa will be made soon.

Anyone who processed application recently knows things are getting tougher.😔😔
Since last week Wednesday capture appointment booking was enforced and it's date is already in 3 week's time, that is payments made today can only come for capture after 9th Feb.

Likewise collection is almost on 1-2 months after capture...😩
We're in a new "regime" so no longer business as usual, in fact *no more express anywhere in Lagos for now

UAE inaugurates visa application centre in Lagos

The United Arab Emirates has inaugurated a visa application and document attestation centre at the office of the UAE Consulate General in Lagos.

This was contained in a statement sent to The PUNCH by the office of the UAE Consulate, stating that the event took place on Tuesday.

The inauguration was led by the Consul General Dr Abdulla Al Mandoos and was attended by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Government on Sustainable Development Goals and Investment, Solape Hammond; Comptroller General of Immigration for Lagos State, Ahmed Aliyu; Country Manager of Emirates Airlines, Paulos Legesse; Vice President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Gbenga Ismail; Head of UAE Visa Centre, Abdulla Alqahtani and several media houses.

Leading the visitors on a tour of the centre, Mandoos reaffirmed that the UAE had worked towards fostering its bilateral relations with Nigeria.

He said, “The vision to establish a Visa and Attestation office in the Centre of Excellence has been in the works for a while now. Lagos being the economic capital of Nigeria with over 20 million in population, the centre aims to put to ease the bilateral business processes between both countries.

“The best equipment has been installed to ensure the process remains fast and convenient with a target of six minutes to complete the entire process from the walk-in.”

“With this new development, we anticipate that the people of Lagos and neighbouring states no longer feel compelled to travel to Abuja to process visas and attest their documents as they can now achieve all that in Lagos State.”

List of countries on the red list and the travel rules for them.
There are currently 11 countries on the red list amid the global outbreak of the Omicron variant.

All international travellers must isolate until they return a negative PCR test.

Amid the outbreak of the Omicron variant, the government has brought in new rules for travellers returning to the UK.

The red list now has 11 countries on the list, including holiday hotspot South Africa.

Any travellers returning from these countries to the UK will be required to stay in a quarantined hotel for 10 nights.

For the full list of countries currently on the red list, as well as the travel rules for these destinations, read below.

Botswana

Eswatini

Lesotho

Malawi

Mozambique

Namibia

Nigeria

South Africa

Zambia

Zimbabwe

What are the red list travel rules?
Only British/Irish nationals and those with UK residence rights will be allowed to enter the UK from a red list country.

If you're returning to the UK from a red list country, you'll need to do the following;

Take a pre-departure test within 48 hours before you travel;

Book a quarantine hotel package which includes two Covid-19 PCR tests;

Fill out a passenger locator form.

Quarantine hotel costs include £2,285 for an adult in one room, and £1,430 per extra adult or child over 11. For children aged 5-11, the cost is £325.

These rules apply no matter what your Covid vaccination status. You can also get more information in the government red list guidance.

If you're returning from a country which isn't on the red list, there are new travel rules in place.

Anyone returning to the UK will need to take a pre-departure test within 48 hours before travel, which can be a PCR or lateral flow test.

Once back in the UK, the rules differ depending on your vaccination status.

If you're vaccinated, you'll need to then self-isolate for two days and take a PCR test on or before day two, where a negative result releases you from self-isolation.

If you're unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, you'll need to self-isolate for 10 days in the UK and take PCR tests on days two and eight.
