ANGOLA'S ELECTION
Vote counting in Angola begins, preliminary results favor the MPLA
Angola elections day closed without any major incidents reported.
The ruling MPLA, which has been in power for close to 50 years, has a significant lead over the major opposition UNITA, according to preliminary election results released on Thursday. UNITA believes the data are unreliable
With more 33% of the votes counted by Thursday morning, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) said the first provisional results showed the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), led since 2017 by President Joao Lourenco, garnered 60.65% of the vote.
According to CNE, the opposition National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), led by Adalberto Costa Junior, garnered 33.85% of the vote.
The nation has not witnessed an election as contested as this one. UNITA's share increased from 13% in 2019 to 22% in May, according to an Afrobarometer study.
Even if the MPLA is currently ahead by seven points, over half of the electorate was divided. 60% of the population of southern Africa is under the age of 25, and many of them were casting their first votes.
ICC AND DAFUR
ICC says Sudan army chief vows cooperation in Darfur probe
The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor said Sudan had promised its "full cooperation" in the war crimes probe of atrocities committed in the Darfur region under ousted president Omar al-Bashir.
Karim Khan spoke after meeting army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan -- who seized power last year in a coup.
"The words that I have just heard from the chair of the sovereignty council are very positive. The challenge now is delivering those in practice. What I do say is that we need to act. It is an embarrassment, a collective embarrassment that after 17 years of the Security Council referral, so much more still needs to be done," he said.
Burhan, who was a senior general under Bashir, has promised his "full cooperation" and commitment to "justice for the people in Darfur", Khan added, as he wrapped up his trip.
"Unless we collectively can find some system of accountability, which is seen to be independent, credible, impartial and not trying to hide the truth but is willing to speak the truth, I think the cycle of violence that we saw in 2003 and (2004) commence," Karim Khan added.

MACRON'S VISIT
Mixed feelings amongst residents of Algiers, ahead of Macron's visit
Franco-Algerian relations are still fraught with resentment caused by the colonial era -- Paris ruled the North African territory for more than 130 years -- and the bitter war of independence.
But they have been particularly stormy in the last year after Macron reportedly questioned Algeria's existence before French occupation and accused the Algiers government of fomenting "hatred towards France".
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune withdrew his country's ambassador to Paris last October in response to the remarks, and also banned French military aircraft from its airspace.
Aides to Macron believe that both sides have moved on, noting the resumption of normal diplomatic relations and overflights to French army bases in the Sahel region south of Algeria.
"Since then, our exchanges with the Algerian government and President Tebboune have continued and intensified," one advisor told reporters.

Black August: A time of reflection and revolution
As a direct relative of two prominent members of the Black Panther Party, revolutionary thought and family history have always been intertwined for Jonathan Peter Jackson, particularly in August.
That's the month in 1971 when his uncle and famed Panther, George Jackson, was killed in an uprising at San Quentin State prison. A revolutionary whose words resonated inside and out of the prison walls, he was a published author, activist and radical thought leader.
Many people know February as the month dedicated to celebrating Black Americans' contributions to a country where they were once enslaved. However, Black History Month has an alternative: Black August.
First celebrated in 1979, Black August was originally created to commemorate Jackson's fight for Black liberation. Fifty one years since his death, Black August is a month-long awareness campaign and celebration dedicated to Black American freedom fighters, revolutionaries and self-professed radicals, both living and deceased.
The annual commemorations have been embraced by activists in the global Black Lives Matter movement, many of whom draw inspiration from freedom fighters like Jackson and his contemporaries.
"It's important to do this now because a lot of people who were on the radical scene during that time period, relatives and non-relatives, who are like blood relatives, are entering their golden years," Jonathan Jackson said.
