WORLD TOURISM DAY 2023 CELEBRATION: AKWA IBOM IS READY TO HOST NIGERIA

The Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria (FTAN) is set for World Tourism Day 2023 in Uyo organised in partnership with the Akwa Ibom State Government.

The theme for this year's celebration is 'Tourism & Green Investment'. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has identified investments as one of the key priorities for tourism’s recovery and future growth and development.

The World Tourism Day WTD 2023 is coming to Uyo! Tourism practitioners from across Nigeria, heads of Federal and state agencies in the Tourism sector and key stakeholders/players shall converge in Akwa Ibom State from the 26th to 28th September 2023 to mark World Tourism Day.

The activities lined up to mark the event in Akwa Ibom state are;

26th - Arrivals & Cocktail

27th - Tourism Conference & Award Nite

28th - Visit to Akwa Ibom State Tourism Assets

For World Tourism Day 2023, UNWTO highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments for people, for the planet and for prosperity. It will be a call to action to the international community, governments, multilateral financial institutions, development partners and private sector investors to unite around a new tourism investment strategy.

All executives of the various tourism associations in the state are expected to attend the events. Owners and operators of Hospitality, Catering and Leisure facilities should prepare adequately to host the teeming guests that are coming in.

Cocktail & Grills Festival unveiled to boost tourism in Akwa Ibom

Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom State, is in jolly mood, as leading brand in tourism promotion, Ibom Tourism Nigeria Ltd, is set to hold Cocktail and Grill Festival on November 19, 2023.

According to a statement issued by the project team lead, Allen Effeh at a press conference in Uyo on Friday, September 1, 2023, the objective of the festival, which is slated for Kings & Queens, Ewet Housing Estate, is to bring the entire city together for a fantastic experience filled with mouthwatering food, refreshing drinks, captivating music, lasting friendships, and loads of fun and camaraderie.

“The Cocktail and Grill Festival promises to be the ultimate gathering of food-tertainment enthusiasts in Nigeria, featuring a vibrant celebration of street food culture in Nigeria’s emerging and exciting city, Uyo,” he said.

We intend to turn the spotlight on the art of crafting cocktails, as the festival also aims at encouraging healthy drinking habits. “We’ll also shine the light on the incredible grills created from local recipes, which Uyo is known for, while honouring the individuals and brands who passionately contribute to this craft and hospitality.

Allen, whose outfit Ibom Tourism Ltd. has dedicated over a decade into the promotion of destination Akwa Ibom, said there is no better time to further promote tourism in Akwa Ibom State than now, considering the ARISE Agenda manifesto of the current governor, Pastor Umo Eno, which has given priority to the tourism sector and also backed words with action.

As thousands of fun-lovers gather in November, he called on individuals, entrepreneurs, the media and brands to cash in on the platform the festival offers, to connect to potential clients/customers as sponsors and/or partners, either for activation or to gain visibility,” Effeh stated.

How tourism can boost the economy of Akwa Ibom State in 2024 and beyond.

Tourism can be a major driver of economic growth for Akwa Ibom State in 2024 by attracting visitors and generating revenue. Here are some ways tourism can boost the state's economy:

1. Developing tourist attractions: The state can invest in developing, recreating, and completing the already available tourist attractions such as beaches, museums, wildlife parks, play parks, fountain resorts, and historical sites that showcase the cultural heritage of the state. By doing so, tourists will be attracted to these sites and spend money on accommodation, food, transportation, and souvenirs.

2. Promotion of tourism: Akwa Ibom State can promote its tourist attractions through social media, advertisements, International and local TV advertisements, and by participating in travel fairs and exhibitions. By doing so, the state can reach out to potential visitors and showcase what the state has to offer.

3. Infrastructure development: The state can invest in infrastructure development such as International airports, good roads, secure waterways, good security architecture framework, and world-class hotels to make it easier for visitors to access the state's attractions. This will make the state more attractive to tourists and also boost the local economy.

4. Support for local businesses: Akwa Ibom State can support local businesses such as restaurants, souvenir shops, and transportation providers by promoting them to tourists. This will not only help these businesses to grow but also contribute to the local economy.

5. Training of tourism professionals: The state can provide training and certification programs to tourism professionals such as tour guides, hotel staff, and restaurant workers to improve the quality of their services. This will enhance the experience of tourists and encourage them to return, leading to more revenue for the state.

Overall, tourism can be a major driver of economic growth for Akwa Ibom State in 2024 if the state invests in developing its tourist attractions, promoting tourism, improving infrastructure, supporting local businesses, and training tourism professionals. Akwa Ibom State can be more, away from oil and gas.

The Kwa Falls is located in Anegeje village in Akamkpa LGA of Cross River State and is an extension of the Kwa River. Its sparkling waters cascade down basement rocks situated at the Oban side of the Cross River National Park. There are 234 steps made to the Kwa Falls, and the waterfall flows into a canopy of the tropical rainforest and mangrove forest that is rich in Mahogany, Ebony, and Spruce trees in a fascinating landscape.
