My great-great-great grandmother, Ingebjoerg Persdatter Nedrebo, was born in 1826 and grew up in Lysebotn on Lysefjord. When she was 16 years old, her uncle took her to say goodbye to the man she loved as he was emigrating to America. When they arrived for their farewells, Ingeborg’s uncle told her she could get on the boat and leave with him. She did - but without being able to say goodbye to her family. She never saw her family or her homeland again.

Ingeborg and her husband settled in Wisconsin, USA, and had several children. While they were still young her husband died. She remarried a man who was also Norwegian. They had several children together, including Johanna who is my great great grandmother.

When my husband and I had the chance to come to Norway for a visit, it was a dream come true. I knew that the one place I had to see for sure was Lysebotn. We feel so lucky that we found Jim to give us a tour of Lysefjord all the way to Lysebotn. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and it was beyond worth it.

Being there in Lysebotn in many ways felt like coming home. I wonder if our bones know the places that we come from - kind of like Salmon know how to get back home every year. Visiting the fjord, learning about it, seeing and standing on the actual land where my ancestors lived and farmed and survived was incredible.

I would have loved the tour even without the family connection - but having that made it extra special. We learned so much from Jim and got to see such neat things along the way including seals!
