The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was a flightless bird endemic to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. Related to pigeons and doves, it stood about a meter tall, weighing about 20 kilograms. The origin of the word dodo is not very clear. Some believe that it is derived from the Dutch word dodoor which means a slothful individual.Other believe it's from Portuguese and means "simpleton" or "crazy". The
first written account of encounter with the bird finds mention in the 1602 journal of a Dutch captain Willem van Westsanen. The dodo is a wonderful example of both, nature at its best to help every organism to evolve and make most of the present environmental conditions, as well as human activity behind the extinction of other life forms. The phrase "to go the way of the dodo" means to fall out of common usage or practice. It is a sad tale indeed of how man´s selfish use of the world despoiled paradise and led to the Dodo´s demise along with other avian endemics and much more besides. Worse still is the fact that if we could turn back the clock, despite all we have learned, we would probably do it all again so long as humans see the natural world as their resource rather than their companion. Our art-cafe aims at giving some kind of rebirth to Dodo. We offer you a nice chill atmosphere, alternative music (trip-hop, funk, soul, reggae, folk, oriental, dub step, down tempo, lounge etc.), experimental and animation shorts from all over the world on 2 screens.
