OVERVIEW OF KHOTANG HALESI TOUR.
Among the most popular pilgrimage site of Nepal, Khotang Halesi Tour is one of the popular temple known as The Pashupatinath of eastern Nepal. It’s situated in the Khotang district, 3,100 ft. – 4,734 ft above sea level and between two major holly river of Dudh Kosi to the right and Sun Kosi To the left. Halesi Mahadev is recognized site of Hindu, Buddhist pilgrimage and Kirant. It is 215 km east of Kathmandu valley. The Halesi Temple is located at the top of a small hill inside the beautiful caves. There are others numerous small beautiful caves as well. The importance here is the image of Lord inside of cave which is the additional beauty of the tour.

It is also a kind of pride for the people living there, as famous as other temples like the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, Lumbini in Kapilvastu etc. internationally it is known as a natural cave which lies in the 4th remote hilly region and believed to be in existence since 6000 years.

Lord Haleshi Mahadev cave is a sacred temple situated in Khotang District of Nepal. It is believed that this cave has been used by Lord Shiva to be protected himself and hide from the demon Bhasmasur approximately past 6000 years. The glory of three different religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, and Kirat), this pilgrimage and Halesi Mahadev is worshipped as the great god even of gods and goddess (Devadidev) by Hindus, the founder of Kirat religion is believed to have origin at this place by Kirat people, whereas Buddhists venerate Halesi regarding it as one of their six important pilgrimage sites.

It is believed that ascetic of Shaiva (The existing Hindus from time immemorial), and Buddhists and also other several ascetics have obtained Salvation meditating at Halesi. Buddhists worship it as a divine place where their great Guru Rimpoche, Padmasambhava meditated and accomplished immortality. Hence, Buddhist religion followers, priests come to worship Halesi with a belief of getting 10 more years of lifespan and also Salvation.

It is known as ‘Marathi’ in the Tibetan language. This sacred site is worshiped as a chariot leading towards good deed from misdeed, unreality to reality, sin to justice and ultimately towards Salvation.



HOW THEY FOUND THE HALESI?
Likewise, the historical view about how this sacred place with ensconced Mahadev was addressed is like this, “There was a bushy jungle and once a local Rai caste hunter was hunting at this forest. He tried to hunt a deer that runs into the bushes. Hunting dog tried to search for the deer and went into the bushes but both of them didn’t return back. After this, the hunter seeks help from villagers and went to the bushes where they found a cave. Curiously, they entered the cave and found a big Shivalinga winded round by snake. They were delighted to see this and began worshipping it as a dwelling of Lord Shiva. There are several other religious and mythological reasons behind the growing religious significance of Halesi.”

HOW IT BECOME HALESI?
This is how local people describe the reason behind the name of this sacred site located in a serene natural hilly environment. “Myth says that there was once a huge tree of Madane (tree of Seedless fruit) just above the current Halesi Mahadev. A bird named ‘Halesho’ used to chirp sitting at that tree. So, elderly people decided to name this place after the name of that bird ‘Halesho’ and it became ‘Halesi’.”

Rout we follow of Khotang Halesi Tour.

The journey to this holy place begins from Kathmandu passing Banepa, following B.P Highway, via Khurkot, turning the route to Ghurmi through mid-hilly highway. After Burma, we continue to follow the route that extends up to Okhaldhunga, Solukhumbu, and Halesi,.Travelling 10km distance by vehicle we reach to Jayaram Ghat connected with Dudh Koshi River. in 2 hours After crossing the Dudh Kosi River reach Halesi Bazaar which is our final destination.

मारातिका गुफाको नामकरण गुरु पद्मसम्भव र राजकुमारी मन्दारवाले तीन महिनाको आयुसाधना सफलता भई बुद्ध अमितायुस्बाट आयुसिद्धिको प्राप्ति द्वारा मरणको अन्त वा समाप्ति गरिएको कारण यस ठाउँको नाम संस्कृत भाषामा मारातिक रहेको मानिन्छ।

मरातिक गुफा (संस्कृत: मरातिक; तिब्बती: མ་རཱ་ཏི་ཀ, འཆི་བ་མཐར་བྱེད།, वयली: ', खोटाङ जिल्लाअन्तर्गत पूर्वी नेपालको पहाडी भू-भागमा अवस्थित एक प्रख्यात तीर्थस्थल हो। यो तीर्थस्थल सगरमाथा देखि दक्षिण-पश्चिम तिर लगभग १८५ किलोमिटरको टाढा हलेसी तुवाचुङ्ग न. पा. को वार्ड नम्बर ७ मा रहेको छ। यस गुफाको प्राकृतिक भू-बनोट विश्वमै अनौठो मानिन्छ। यहाँ तीर्थस्थल तिब्बती वज्रयान बौद्ध धर्मको ग्रन्थ र इतिहासहरू[२][३] मा उल्लेख गरिएकोअनुसार गुरु पद्मसम्भव र राजकुमारी मन्दारवाले बुद्ध अमितायुस्बाट आयुसिद्धिको प्राप्ति गर्नुभएको पवित्र भूमि हुनाले देशविदेशबाट हजारौंको संख्यामा बौद्ध धर्मालम्बीहरू दर्शन र वार्षिक पूजापाठको लागि उपस्थित हुने गर्दछन्। साथै हिन्दु धर्मालम्बीहरूले पनि यहाँ असुर भस्मासुरबाट महादेव लुगेको भन्ने मौखिक कथनको व्यख्या साथ एक विशेष तीर्थस्थलको रूपमा मनिन्ने गरेको छ।

The Halesi-Maratika Caves (also the Haleshi Mahadev temple) are located next to the village of Mahadevasthan, in the Khotang District of eastern Nepal, 3,100 ft. – 4,734 ft. above sea level. The cave and temple are about 185 km south west of Mount Everest. The temple is a venerated pilgrimage site for Hindus, Buddhists and Kirat.[1] The caves are called the Halesi Mahadev Temple by Hindus who associate them with Mahadeva, a form of Shiva; while they are known as the sacred place to Buddhists, who consider them to be the caves associated with the legend of Padmasambhava.[2] The Kirati Rai of the region worship Halesi as an ancestral deity of the community. The Kirat mundhum, a rich oral tradition of the Kirats, manifests that their ancestor Raechhakule (Khokchilipa) also known as Hetchhakuppa used to stay inside the Halesi cave in the remote past. For that reason, the Kirat/Rais consider Halesi as their ancestral place. [3]
