A Celebration on a Plate: Newar Food Culture and Traditions
Food is more than sustenance for the Newari people of Nepal; it's woven into the very fabric of their culture. Their cuisine, considered one of the most celebrated in Nepal, boasts over 200 dishes, a testament to their rich history and agricultural abundance in the Kathmandu Valley.
A Feast for the Senses
Newari meals are known for their variety and focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. Spices are used judiciously, allowing the natural flavors to shine through. Think beaten rice ("baji") served with an array of side dishes like roasted soybeans ("musya"), fermented mustard greens ("gundruk"), or curried vegetables ("alu tarkari").
But wait, there's more! For the main course, Newari feasts are renowned for their hearty offerings. Imagine copious amounts of beaten rice alongside marinated and grilled water buffalo meat ("choila"). For the adventurous eaters, there are options like lentil cakes ("wo"), stuffed lung, fried liver, or even tripe stuffed with bone marrow.
Food for Every Occasion
Just like their dishes, Newars have a specific food for every occasion. Daily meals might be simpler, with rice, lentil soup ("ken"), and vegetable dishes ("tarkari") forming the base. Festivals, however, are a whole other story. Samay Baji, a platter overflowing with bite-sized snacks, takes center stage during celebrations. This might include spicy dried meat ("chhoyla"), baras (savory lentil pancakes), and Yomari, a sweet dumpling with a rich filling.
Beyond the Plate
Food also plays a symbolic role in Newari traditions. Dishes served during festivals often hold special meanings. For instance, Yomari, prepared during the Yenya festival, symbolizes prosperity and blessings.
Unique Customs
Traditionally, Newars eat with their hands, washing them thoroughly before and after a meal. Utensils used for cooking and serving come in a variety of materials, from gold and silver to clay pottery and even wo

While I trekked anywhere "the yaks are the Unsung hero toiling away in the thin air"demonstrating that true strength comes in all shapes and sizes, even with a shaggy coat and a grumpy expression.
High in the thin air of the Everest region, Dolpo region, Annapurna region or any region of Nepal where the wind whispers secrets to the snow-capped peaks, there lives a vital creature – the yak. More than just a shaggy inhabitant of the Himalayas, the yak is a lifeline for the people living there and the ambitious climbers who dare to challenge Everest, Upper Dolpo or Any other region
Imagine a sherpa village, nestled amidst the stark beauty of the mountains. Every necessity, from food and fuel to building materials, needs to be brought in. Here's where the yak steps in. These sure-footed beasts, with their thick coats and impressive lung capacity, thrive in the harsh environment. They can haul up to 200 pounds of cargo over treacherous trails, navigating icy slopes and rocky paths with ease. They are the Sherpas' delivery vans, the ones who keep the mountain communities functioning.
For climbing expeditions, yaks are like trusty companions. They carry essential supplies – tents, food, and climbing gear – to base camps, saving trekkers the backbreaking effort. These expeditions wouldn't be possible without the yak's strength and resilience.
The importance of yaks goes beyond transportation. Their milk is a source of nourishment, processed into cheese that provides much-needed protein and fat. Even yak dung plays a crucial role – dried and used as fuel, it keeps homes warm in the unforgiving winters.
The yak's contribution to the any region is truly remarkable. They are the backbone of the mountain communities, keeping the lifeblood of supplies flowing and supporting the dreams of climbers. Next time you see a picture of Everest, remember the humble yaks.

We had this great opportunity to witness the Tibetan Lion Dance opening ceremony of Tsum Monastery while we were doing Tsum Valley and Manaslu Trek.
The Tibetan Lion dance, also known as the Snow Lion dance, is a vibrant and energetic performance that is an integral part of Tibetan culture. It is often performed during festivals and celebrations, and it was a fitting choice to grace the opening ceremony of the Tsum Monastery.
The dance is typically performed by two dancers, one representing the head and body of the lion, and the other representing the tail. The dancers wear elaborate costumes made of colorful silk and brocade, adorned with masks and headdresses that resemble the face and mane of a lion.
The dance movements are powerful and graceful, and they mimic the movements of a lion. The dancers leap and prance, they swish their tails, and they roar. The dance is accompanied by the rhythmic beat of drums and cymbals, which adds to the excitement of the performance.

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a beautiful trek through the Annapurna Conservation Area. It's one of the most popular treks in Nepal, and for good reason: it has stunning views of snow-capped mountains, lush forests and lakes. The trail passes through several villages where you can meet local people who live along its path.
The best time to go on this trek is between October and March (though it's possible to do it year-round). This is because there are fewer crowds during these months, but also because there will still be plenty of snow on the mountains surrounding you as well as plenty of waterfalls flowing down from them!
