Pashupatinath is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimages, dedicated to Lord Shiva as the "Lord of all living beings." The Gopal Raja Bansawali credits King Supushpa Deva (300-500 BCE) as the first king to build the temple of Pashupatinath. The inner sanctum of the temple consists of a lingam with five faces—Sadyojata, Vamadeva, Tatpurusha, Aghora, and Ishana—representing different aspects of Lord Shiva.

Nyatapola in Newari means ‘ Five Storeyed.’ This five-storied pagoda-style temple was built by King Bhupatindra Malla in the 18th century and is dedicated to the goddess Siddhi Lakshmi. According to legends, Siddhi Lakshmi was consecrated to restrain the wrath of the ferocious god Bhairavnath.
Five pairs of animals and deities have been installed in each step of this temple. The idols from each step above are ten times more potent than the one below. Thus, the two deities, Singhini and Baghini, on the topmost plinth of the temple are regarded as the most powerful pairs.

On Sri Panchami or Basanta Panchami, people honor Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. This is also the day when young children start their learning journey by worshipping Goddess Saraswati. Moreover, this day signals the beginning of Basanta Ritu (Season), which marks the end of the chilly winter season. Therefore, this day is also called Basanta Pamchami.

Among the magnificent temples of Patan Durbar Square, one of the most remarkable is the Bhimsena temple. This temple is dedicated to Bhimsena, one of the five Pandavas of Mahabharata worshiped for his super strength and bravery, and is popular among the Newar trading community of Kathmandu Valley. This temple of Bhimsena was expanded into a three-storied structure in 1681 by King Srinivas Malla, and his son King Yoganarendra Malla later set up a statue of Bhimasena in his angry aspect, killing Duhsasana.

Panchamukhi Hanuman is an esoteric form of Lord Hanuman who had a huge cult following among the Malla Kings and was worshiped as a guardian deity. This temple, dedicated to Panchamukhi Hanuman on the northeastern side of Nasal Chowk, stands out because of its circular structure with five superimposed roofs. Built in 1655 by King Pratap Malla, it is only accessible to the officiating priest.

25/01/2024

Magh Shukla Purnima marks the 1st purnima of winter solstice. From today a month-long festival of Swasthani Brata Katha is observed.Shree Swasthani is mostly worshiped in Nepal, from the month of Poush to Magh as Parmeshwari, for good fortune, welfare and power. The month-long festival is celebrated by rigorous rituals of fasting, taking bath in the holy river Salinadi and reciting the story of Swasthani.

Swasthani Vratakatha is derived from the Maghmahatmaya series of Skanda Purana, narrated by Lord Kumara to Rishi Agastyamuni. Each of the 31 chapters in this series imparts a distinct lesson to listeners. These tales describe the origin of the universe, societal systems, patience, duty, and salvation.

Interesting Facts: Swayambhunath - Part 2

The Swayambhunath stupa’s long history of renovations and reconstructions is a testament to its enduring significance as a sacred site. The most recent restoration of Swayambhu Stupa was done entirely under the supervision of the chief engineer Jogbir Sthapit which lasted from 1918 to 1921.

The spire was dismantled and rebuilt. The central shaft was renewed. The five Buddha shrines set into the dome were covered with gilt copper, a new statue of Vairocana Buddha was installed, and four new shrines were built to house statues of Tara. A row of prayer wheels were also installed all around the stupa.

Maghe Sankranti is celebrated at Magh 1, as an auspicious day when the sun changes its course of travel from the southward tropic of cancer to the northward tropic of cancer. There is a belief that on this day onwards the days get longer welcoming summer and bringing end to winter.

The delicacies savored during Maghe Sankranti are molasses, sweets made of sesame and molasses, butter, yarm, sweet potatoes and cassava. The family members sit together, savor the delicacies, the elders apply mustard oil on the scalp of younger members, blessing them with a healthy year ahead and sunbath.

Wishing a Happy Maghe Sankranti 2080!

Prithvi Narayan Shah had an early dream of unifying Nepal, which he started after conquering Nuwakot in 1744 A.D. Today, we celebrate Prithvi Jayanti to pay tribute to him by celebrating Rashtriya Ekta Diwas for his contribution to the unification of the country, honoring him.

Interesting Facts: Swayambhunath - Part 1
The Swayambhu Stupa, popularly known as the Monkey temple, is one of the most important stupas in Nepal. Although Shantikar Acharya constructed it over the eternal flame, historical records place its creation in the fifth-century Licchavi period.

Marks the beginning of Kathmandu Valley’s formation: During the Golden Age, when Gods walked the Earth and the Kathmandu Valley existed as a mystical lake (Taodhanahrada), Vipaswi Buddha planted lotus seeds in the Great Lake . After a wait of eighty thousand years, the lotus bloomed with a thousand petals, and the Self-Existent Lord, the Swayambhunath, manifested himself in the form of an Eternal Flame, the Jyotirupa.
