We witnessed a battle at Fothergill Island, Zimbabwe, between two male lions and a large buffalo herd. The lions were stalking an impala, when a buffalo herd appeared on the scene. The lions switched to the buffalo attacked, and the buffalo retreated, but they managed to catch a lead bull. On hearing his cries for help, the herd immediately returned and managed to free him. A standoff ensued, with neither side backing off. The buffalo eventually moved off. We caught up with the herd, and the injured bull was still taking his place up the front. One of the lions was injured. Our National Geographic moment, but for the lions and buffalo, it is tough out there. We were impressed with the courage shown by both the lions and the buffalo.

This afternoon we had our National Geographic moment. Two young male lions were staking an impala. Next thing a herd of about 100 buffalo appeared on the scene heading for water. They caught a male buffalo, and the herd ran off. On hearing the bellow for help, they turned back and rescued their comrade. The buffalo were angry, and went for the lions, but they would not back down. A lot of to and fro, then the buffalo moved off. The result a wounded buffalo and wounded lion, but both should recover. Will download photos from my camera and post in the next couple of days,
