In 1880 the Kawarau suspension bridge was first opened. With gold first discovered in the Shotover river in 1862 many of the miners had to cross the Kawarau river to get to Queenstown prior to the bridge being built. This was largely by crossing over the natural rock bridge. Maori say the rocks once completely bridged the river, the first European settlers had to jump the gap, now as you can see 170years of erosion has made it quite a jump. This however was for many the gate to Queenstown.
