The recent failure of two Auckland based non bonded travel agencies has sparked public calls for regulation of travel agents. Social media comment runs to rubbishing agents and misinformation about what a reputable agency is, or isn’t. These failures to properly account for customer money highlights the importance of dealing with a bonded agency.

The assuring news for customers of TAANZ members is that your TAANZ travel agent subscribes to the TAANZ higher standard.

Remember TAANZ Agents have to meet strict membership & financial criteria reviewed at least twice annually, and payments made to TAANZ Travel Agents are protected. Non bonded agents are not regulated in this manner.

TAANZ Travel Agents provide New Zealand consumers with some financial protection, they are also your advocate if a supplier lets you down, or if travel disruptions occur, they are there to help prior, during and after your travel has commenced.

News today of the failure of Auckland based non bonded agency Travel Globe has sparked public calls for regulation of travel agents. Social media comment runs to rubbishing agents and misinformation about what a reputable agency is, or isn’t.

Some say it’s no good when an agent goes belly up and I agree it does have the nasty side effect of tarnishing the industry but ask yourself this question; are any of your customers contacting you today to check out whether you’re legit? No, it’s unlikely they are because they know you are and as a member of TAANZ you subscribe to our higher standard of travel agency.

What the failure of a non bonded agent(s) emphasizes is that the industry doesn’t need regulation. Banks regulate and yet people still get caught in scams. TAANZ does a fine job of self regulating it’s members and the members of TAANZ do a better job of keeping themselves in check.

TAANZ hosted agents in Nelson at its Town Hall meeting May 22nd. Unfortunately some late apologies kept numbers down but spirits were high and a wide range of topics was covered.
TAANZ will take steps to put together a remuneration survey anonymising the results to give members a better view on rem, benefits and city / region. We also discussed the school to agency pathway and what TAANZ and its kindred associations are doing to help focus on Travel agent as career. TAANZ has also made a decision to continue with the Town Hall style meeting which will recommence with Hamilton in late November following the TAANZ AGM and Summit in October.

What we have noticed is that some finalists have not made purchases and so as to make sure everyone has the opportunity to join us we are putting on another 10 tables.
