8.53am Monday 19 August. The bridge still remains closed - check out NZTA journey planner for alternative routes.

8.05pm: The Waihenga Bridge on SH53 over the Ruamāhanga River has now been closed. River levels are expected to peak at 4.7m tonight around 1am and remain elevated until late morning on Monday 19 August. The barrage gates are now closing/closed.

⚠️ ROAD CLOSURE - SH53 MARTINBOROUGH

The sustained rainfall in the Tararua ranges is translating to high flow in the Ruamāhanga River. It's anticipated to peak around 5 metres in the early hours of Monday morning.

We anticipate the spillways to be operating and State Highway 53 closed at Waihenga Bridge and Jenkins Dip from sometime this afternoon once unsafe water levels are reached. At this stage we are not aware of Ponatahi Bridge being impacted to the point of closure.

GWRC staff will continue to monitor rainfall and river levels. SWDC will update this post should the road close, and you can find out up to date information about roads and weather via:
