You arrive at the check in counter at the airport, place your baggage onto the weigh scale, and hear the dreaded words "overweight".
Your first move is to try and convince the check in counter crew to accept your baggage but if that doesn't work, what can you do? Here are a few suggestions.
1. If your carry-on baggage isn't overweight, you can transfer some items to it. If you're still overweight...
2. If you have someone with you or you're with a group and one or more of your group has some extra kilos available, you can transfer some of your baggage contents to them.
I would not recommend this if you're traveling alone. Aside from the possibility that you will never see your items again, doing this may seem highly suspicious to other people. It wouldn't do to be reported to airport security.
3. You can try wearing some of your packed clothes. If you have to, you can wear two pants and two shirts, one inside the other. I wouldn't recommend wearing more than that as it might get too hot such that you get heat exhaustion. Plus, your mobility or range of movement might be reduced.
4. If you have extra money, you can just pay for the extra weight. Airlines have different rates for overweight baggage so I can't give you any idea how much it is. One thing is sure, however. The fee will be higher than if you just purchased a ticket with checked-in baggage before the flight.
5. If you can't afford to pay or you're not willing to pay for the extra weight, you'll have to leave some of your items. If someone took you to the airport, you can leave the items with them or you can leave them at the airport.
Lesson:
Plan ahead and determine how heavy your baggage will be before you buy your ticket. If you're staying for more than a few days, plan on having your clothes laundered at the place you're visiting so that you can bring less clothes.
Also, you might be bringing reading materials, binders of brochures, souvenirs, and other items on your return flight. So, even if your bags weren't overweight when you left, you might be overweight on your return.
It's a good idea to buy a good quality luggage scale so you can weigh your baggage while you're at home or before your flight. If you know you're overweight, you can purchase extra baggage weight allowance before your flight. It's cheaper than buying the weight allowance at the airport upon check-in.
