NM Cordillera to Conduct Lecture and Demonstration on Yeast Making and Ricewine Brewing

In celebration of National Women’s Month 2022, the Cordillera in partnership with the Municipal Tourism Office of Kiangan will be conducting a lecture-demonstration on yeast making and ricewine brewing on 24 March 2022, 9:00 A.M. at the National Museum Cordillera located within the Kiangan Shrine or Philippine Veteran Affairs Office compound in Kiangan, Ifugao.

Also highlighting and strengthening women’s participation and leadership in the preservation of Cordilleran culture, this activity generally aims to promote appreciation of indigenous knowledge and skills and help ensure their transmission to the younger generation. Specifically, this lecture-demonstration seeks to engage wider community participation that includes the youth, teachers and community members in safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage of yeast making and ricewine brewing, which are indispensable in producing the wine that is integral in the numerous rituals of the Cordillera.

Mrs. Junia A. Codamon and Mrs. Mary Guimbatan, both members of the Nagacadan Farmers Organization and the Nagacadan Ricewine Brewers Association will share their knowledge and skills on yeast making and ricewine brewing, including the use of indigenous resources for the same culinary heritage. They will also share how they sustain the quality of their produce, how they continue the transmission of yeast making and ricewine brewing for use during family occasions and community cultural festivities, and how they were eventually empowered through these indigenous products. Students, teachers, and women from various community organizations will be invited as participants.

This lecture-demonstration will be conducted on site and video-documented, with the documentary to be published in the NM Cordillera Rice Terraces Site Museum page after the activity.
