Locale Round-Up
Baguio City, Philippines
Panoramic green-pine trees that spread around the city's landscape is what the City of Baguio has been dubbed as: the "City of Pines." Yet, as some travel writers describe: " that's only a nickname for the city." Still Baguio City stays as the "Summer Capital of the Philippines." Such label is attributed to its cold weather as a result of its steep elevation, about 50,000 feet above sea level.
So, Baguio City remains one of the top tourist destinations in Northern Luzon with 350,000 people from different ethnic, nationalities, and religious backgrounds. The population bloats during summer holidays and the Panagbenga Festival (Flower Festival) when local and foreign tourists migrate to this friendly-weather city.
It lies in the province of Benguet, filling-up about about 57.49 square kilometers land area in the Cordillera Autonomous Region. The city is encircled by the Cordillera's mountain ranges. At the core of the city dwells a man-made lagoon or lake known as the Burham Park. The name was ascribed to an American urban planner (of the city) named Daniel Hudson Burham.
Baguio City serves as a take-off point leading to other nearby tourist spots like Banaue, La Trinidad, Sagada and Mount Pulag.
