Singapore Prime Minister sharing his trip to Israel

Crossed from Jordan over to Israel yesterday. Before I left, I had breakfast with Prince Ghazi, the cousin of King Abdullah. He is the King’s Chief Advisor for Religious and Cultural Affairs and Personal Envoy, and like the King a firm believer in inter-faith dialogue and harmony.

Next, I visited Al Maghtas, the site by the Jordan River where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist. Then we crossed the King Hussein/Allenby bridge into the West Bank.

Like us, Israel believes strongly in research and technology to improve lives. So it was an honour to receive the Doctorate Philosophiae Honoris Causa from Hebrew University. Also witnessed the signing of 3 MOUs between Hebrew University and Singapore institutions NRF, NUS and NTU.

Ended the day with a tour of the Old City in Jerusalem. It is a fascinating place. Once seen as the centre of the world, it has holy sites sacred to the three Abrahamic faiths — the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque for Muslims, the Western Wall and Temple Mount for Jews, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for Christians. – LHL

Who can forget the experience of going through the memoirs in Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum?

Was deeply moved by my visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem yesterday.

"Never again!" This declaration refers to Hitler’s murder of six million Jews during WW2. But taken more widely, it is a goal mankind has yet to realise in full measure.

Since the Holocaust, other massacres and genocides have happened. Mankind is capable of terrible violence. We must come together to prevent more, regardless of race or religion.

Earlier, I called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - בנימין נתניהו. Our two countries have a longstanding relationship. When Singapore unexpectedly became independent in 1965, the Israeli Defence Forces helped us to build the SAF from scratch. For that, we will always be grateful.

PM Netanyahu and I discussed many areas of cooperation, from innovation and R&D, to cyber-security and countering terrorism. At the same time, Singapore is concerned about the Middle East Peace Process, like many other countries.

I encouraged Israel to resume direct negotiations with the Palestinians to reach a just and lasting two-state solution. We are friends with both Israel and Palestine, and hope to see them living in peace together. - LHL
