In 1942 William Brown was posted as a recently commissioned Indian Army Officer to the Gilgit Agency in the very north of the North West Frontier. He travelled widely, learnt the local dialects and built the Chilas Polo ground. After a brief period away from Gilgit, just prior to Partition in early 1947 he was appointed acting Commandant of the Gilgit Scoots. To his horror he learnt that the Viceroy Lord Mountbatten had ruled that Gilgit, despite being 99% Muslim, should be ceded to Hindu rule. Knowing that this was a disastrous and callous decision that would lead to insurrection, chaos and bloodshed, the 25 year-old acting Major Brown took it upon himself to oust the Indian Governor, fly to Karachi and offer Gilgit to the Pakistanis, who accepted with alacrity. Brown knew that he was in the eyes of the Indians and Mountbatten, a mutineer who would have been executed, had he fallen into Indian hands. Thus it is all the more extraordinary that six months later he was awarded the MBE, the citation of which was so vague that it gave no indication of the reason. As well as giving an hour-by-hour account of this unfolding political and military drama, Brown's memoir capture the atmosphere and magic of this remote country at the close of the Empire.
the
Born in Scotland in 1922, Brown's military career is covered in this book. He remained in India and Pakistan after leaving the Army and married Margaret. They returned to the Borders in 1959. He died in 1984 but his widow is very much alive and lives in North London.

YASIN: A two-day traditional spring festival kicked off in Yasin valley of Ghizer district on 11th 12th March 2018 .

The Tokhamrazi festival is celebrated in the first and second week of March, heralding arrival of spring season after harsh winter.

Tokhamrazi means sowing seeds in fields and after celebrating the festival, local residents start cultivating crops, besides playing games like polo.

Karim Shah Nizari, a local, said performance of rituals, traditional games, cultural music, local food distribution among friends, polo game, horse jumping, folk dances, tug-of-war and musical shows were the features of the festival.
GB tourism department has included Tokhamrazi festival in its calendar of events. The first day programme of the event was held in Manich village in a centuries-old house which is locally known as Takhto Khatan.

A large number of people from different parts of the region, including GB ministers, Legislative Assembly members, government officials, civil society members, representatives of cultural and social organisations, women, children and students participated in the event.

Hamas, one of the three rituals performed on the occasion, featured a bonfire with people attired in traditional dresses dancing around the flames amid cultural music. Locals believe the higher the flames, the better their crops.

Second ritual is Ajaro, wherein people carrying fire sticks march from one village to another at night while singing folk songs in the belief that it would rid them of evil spirits.

On the second day of the festival, a polo match and horse jumping competitions would be held.

Houses in Yasin valley are decorated, and local dishes, including Makoti, prepared and distributed among friends and relatives.

Raja Jahanzaib Khan, GBLA member from the area, inaugurated the festival. On the occasion, he said the activities attracted tourists to the region, besides forging brotherhood among diverse communities of the area.
