The change in Pakistan's net metering policy for rooftop solar panels to gross metering is likely to push consumers back towards fossil fuels. The new policy, aimed at discouraging solar power use, could undermine efforts to promote renewable energy, reversing investments made to safeguard the climate through on-grid solar panels. This shift is part of broader measures discussed with the IMF, reflecting concerns about the financial impact on power distribution companies and rising electricity costs due to idle capacity payments.

For more details, you can read the full article

It will be replaced with gross metering to sell expensive grid electricity to consumers

Noni an expensive Super Food :

Personally, I've been cultivating Noni plants in Karachi for three years, and this year, I successfully nurtured my first blossomed Noni flower in North Nazimabad, Karachi.

The Noni plant (Morinda citrifolia) has garnered scientific interest for its potential health benefits. Traditionally used in Polynesia, recent studies highlight its antioxidant, immune-boosting, and possible anticancer properties. Laboratory research suggests Noni may enhance chemotherapy efficacy and inhibit cancer cell transformation, though human clinical evidence is still limited.

Noni has also shown promise in managing diabetes and inflammation, improving joint health, and supporting metabolic functions. Despite anecdotal claims about its blood pressure management capabilities, more robust clinical trials are needed.

Additionally, Noni extracts might combat antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis bacteria, offering alternative treatment avenues.

However, safety concerns such as potential liver toxicity necessitate careful usage and professional consultation.

Sugar, a staple ingredient in kitchens worldwide, has a fascinating history deeply rooted in ancient cultures. The journey begins in India, where sugar, as a stand-alone product, was first invented. The English name for sugar, derived from Latin "succaram," traces its lineage through Persian "Shakar" and Sanskrit "Shakara."

Fast forward two millennia, and China emerges as a pioneer in sugar refinement. Introducing a bleaching process to remove impurities and achieve a pristine white color, Chinese sugar quickly gained popularity for its aesthetic appeal, despite being less healthy than its traditional counterpart.

This innovation led to the distinction between "Chini" for white sugar and "shakara" for traditional brown sugar in almost all Indian languages. The story of sugar exemplifies the intersection of cultures and the evolution of culinary practices, shaping the way we perceive and enjoy sweetness today.

The South Asian region, particularly Sindh and South Punjab, has experienced significant water-related challenges over the past decade, with various floods impacting the area. In 2010, inundation in Sindh caused widespread devastation, affecting agriculture and livelihoods. Similarly, in 2011, floods wreaked havoc, leaving a trail of destruction. Looking ahead to 2022, the region faced another deluge, exacerbating existing challenges. This year, despite a promising wheat harvest, cotton cultivation remains uncertain due to the looming La Niña weather phenomenon over South Asia. Forecasted to create a massive water body surpassing the scale of the 2022 floods, this event poses serious threats to agricultural activities.

The primary contributing factor is the Left Bank Outfall Drain waterway, constructed artificially east of and parallel to the Indus River, intended to divert saltwater from the Punjab plains to Munchar Lake. Once the largest freshwater lake in Pakistan and home to a community of 500 Mallah people residing on 48 houseboats forming a village, Munchar Lake faces rapid salination, leading to the disappearance of this unique settlement. Additionally, heavy rains in the Khuzdar and Kalat divisions of Balochistan have led to a rise in the water level of the Nai Gaj River, subsequently inundating Hamal Lake. The overflow from these water bodies breaches the banks of the Indus River, further elevating the water levels of Manchar Lake. Consequently, areas such as Kambar, Dadu, Jamshoro, Nawabshah, and Larkana districts in Sindh are at risk of flooding, compounding the challenges faced by the region. While this floodwater makes its way to the Arabian Sea through Tando's of Hyderabad and Bunder's of Thatta District, heavy and continuous monsoon rains in southern Sindh will further intensify the flood and slow the speed of floodwater drainage into the sea.

The result of heavy floods from Balochistan from Nai Gaj and from Punjab through LBOD, though Kotri, superimposing the heavy rains in the Indus Basin area, will be enough to drown vast agricultural land in its path. This flood will bring no good to the Barani land, as floodwater drained by Punjab is highly contaminated and contains chemicals and heavy metals. To date, land soaked in floods of 2022 has not yet been declared suitable for agriculture. The question is, if we cannot fight with nature, what should we do? The answer to this question is to clear the natural waterway up to the Arabian Sea from Manchar to Kati bundar and remove any agricultural land, village, or bund on the way to save Sindh from breaking its own 2022 record of a 100 km swimming pool, which is projected to hit 273 km this year.

Parizaad or Parijat flower, with its mystical origins and divine fragrance, has captured the hearts of cultures across South Asia. In Hindu mythology, it's believed to be born out of the love and sacrifice of the celestial nymph, Parijataka, or to symbolize the triumph of love as Lord Krishna brought it from the heavens to please his beloved consort, Satyabhama. This fragrant blossom, blooming only at night, carries tales of eternal devotion and celestial battles.

While its petals hold tales of divine romance and mythical conquests, the Parijat flower also whispers secrets of healing and rejuvenation. In Ayurvedic tradition, its essence is treasured for its potential therapeutic benefits, believed to soothe the senses and nourish the spirit. Extracts from this rare bloom find their way into high-end perfumes, skincare formulations, and aromatic oils, captivating the senses and invoking a sense of luxury and exoticism.

In temples and gardens, the Parijat flower continues to enchant worshippers and admirers alike, its delicate beauty serving as a reminder of the transient nature of life and the enduring power of love and devotion. Whether in stories of divine romance or in the form of precious oils and fragrances, the Parijat flower remains a symbol of beauty, love, and spiritual transcendence, weaving its enchanting fragrance into the tapestry of cultures and traditions.

There are three main types of dragon fruit: white flesh with pink skin, red flesh with pink skin, and white flesh with yellow skin. The taste and nutritional benefits of the fruit are the same, regardless of color.
Is Yellow or Red Dragon Fruit Better?
Whether you choose yellow or red dragon fruit, you're sure to find them nutritious additions to a healthy and balanced diet. Yellow dragon fruit, however, contains loads of antioxidants, high levels of iron, and healthy fats that benefit your heart, hair, skin, and immune system.
Best part is I have many of them growing in Karachi namely Dark Star, Red Ruby, Israilli yellow, Malaysian Yellow, Chaina Red, Moroccon Red etc

**A Journey Through Time: Hala and Bhitshah Handicrafts Adventure**

Embarking on a journey from the bustling streets of Karachi, we set our sights on a small oasis of culture just 16 kilometers away – BhitShah, a town steeped in the legacy of Sufi Saint Shah Abdul Latif Bhatti. Our adventure began at the crack of dawn, the promise of vibrant traditions and artistic marvels guiding our path along National Highway 5.

As we ventured closer to our destination, whispers of ancient craftsmanship danced in the air. Cotton fields stretched as far as the eye could see, reminiscent of a time when this land was adorned with the finest fibers known to humanity. Egyptian and Sindhi cotton, nurtured by the fertile deltas of the Nile and Indus rivers, have long been revered as the epitome of textile excellence.

Our curiosity piqued, we delved deeper into the history of textile artistry in Sindh. From the ancient dyeing traditions of Moenjodaro to the exotic allure of Sindon cloth in Greece, every thread of fabric seemed to weave a tale of cultural exchange and artistic prowess. And at the heart of it all lay the timeless art of block printing – a meticulous process that transforms wooden blocks into intricate tapestries of color and pattern.

Arriving in BhitShah, we were greeted by the soul-stirring rhythms of Ajrak printing. This unique form of block printing, passed down through generations, has become synonymous with the town's identity. As we wandered through the vibrant markets, artisans shared their stories with us, each design bearing the imprint of centuries-old traditions and a deep reverence for nature's bounty. Here, we witnessed the age-old ritual of indigo dye washing – a process steeped in tradition and mystery. Watching as the fabric softened under the gentle touch of indigo, we couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the timeless beauty of Sindh's handicrafts.
But our journey didn't end there. With the setting sun casting a golden glow upon the horizon, we made our way to Hala – a city steeped in the art of pottery. Here, amidst the labyrinthine streets, we found ourselves surrounded by a symphony of colors and shapes. Terracotta pots adorned with intricate motifs, colorful wooden chairs that seemed to beckon with tales of distant lands – each creation a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Hala's artisans.

As night fell, we found sanctuary in the welcoming embrace of the Culture Department Guest House in Bhitshah.

And so, our journey through the enchanting realms of Hala and Bhitshah came to an end, leaving us with memories that would last a lifetime. For in the heartlands of Sindh, amidst the swirl of colors and the echo of ancient traditions, we discovered a world where art and history intertwine, creating a tapestry of beauty that transcends time itself.

Rooplo Kolhi's Epic Saga and Nagarparkar's Enchanting Wilderness Beckon Adventure Seekers:

In the heart of Tharparkar, where the golden sands of the world's 20th largest desert stretch across 22,000 square kilometers, lies the tale of Rooplo Kolhi, a fearless Sindhi freedom fighter who etched his legacy in the Karoonjhar Mountains of Nagarparkar District. As we explore the untamed beauty of Nagarparkar, let's delve into the riveting story of Rooplo Kolhi's valiant fight against the British rulers.Tharparkar, a region largely occupied by the indigenous Kolhi community, became a battleground for resistance against British occupation. Rooplo Kolhi, born in 1818 in Konbhari village, emerged as the leader of the Rajput army, comprising fighters from the Kolhi community. The lush Karoonjhar Mountains, surrounded by the vast Tharparkar desert, became the backdrop for Rooplo's defiance.

Between 1843 and 1859, Rooplo Kolhi led his Rajput army in a relentless battle against the British forces. Defeating Col George Tyrwhitt thrice in the challenging terrain of Karoonjhar, Rooplo proved that the British couldn't conquer the land of the Kolhis with their modern weaponry. The resistance used guerilla tactics, catapults, katars, and axes, facing the colonizers with unparalleled bravery. In 1859, the British, determined to crush the rebellion, arrested Rooplo Kolhi. Despite severe torture, Rooplo refused to disclose information about his comrades and remained steadfast in his commitment to resist British rule. Nearly 6,000 Rajput fighters laid down their lives in clashes with the British army, staining the rivers Patyani and Ghodhro red. Rooplo's wife, Meenawati, stood by his side, urging him to continue the struggle.

The betrayal of Rooplo Kolhi by his own people led to his arrest and eventual hanging on August 22, 1858. The traitors were rewarded with land, while Rooplo's family migrated to Kunri. Despite the hardships faced by Rooplo's descendants, his legacy lives on, and visitors from India and Pakistan pay tribute to this national hero in the rugged mountains of Karoonjhar. After Rooplo's death, his mother Kesrbai and wife Meenawati migrated to Kunri, a part of today's Umerkot district, where his later descendants settled. The story of Rooplo Kolhi is etched in the history of Sindh, taught in schools, and celebrated through various tributes, including the Rooplo Kolhi Resort in Nagarparkar.

In 2017, a resort named Rooplo Kolhi Resort was inaugurated in Nagarparkar by the Sindh Tourism Development Corporation. Chief Minister of Sindh published a book about Rooplo Kolhi in October 2022, and civil society organizations advocate for declaring Karoonjhar Mountains a world heritage site, recognizing its significance in the fight against the British.

Nagarparkar's allure extends far beyond its historical significance. The desert's enchanting wilderness invites adventurers to witness a rich variety of wildlife, including the majestic peacocks adorning the arid landscape and migratory birds like Egyptian vultures and flamingos painting the sky with their vibrant hues.Marvel at the vibrant plumage of peacocks as they dance gracefully in the desert, creating a living tapestry against the golden sands. Look to the skies for avian spectacles, as migratory birds like Egyptian vultures and flamingos find sanctuary in Nagarparkar's serene landscapes.

For those seeking this unique blend of history and nature, reaching Nagarparkar from Karachi is an adventure in itself. Begin your journey from Karachi, the bustling metropolis on the Arabian Sea. Opt for a thrilling road trip! Take the National Highway (N-5) from Karachi towards Mirpurkhas. From Mirpurkhas, follow the road signs to reach Nagarparkar, approximately 300 kilometers away. The scenic journey promises glimpses of rural Sindh and the evolving landscapes as you approach the desert.

Embark on a journey that intertwines history, nature, and adventure, immersing yourself in the tales of Rooplo Kolhi and the captivating beauty of Nagarparkar. Tharparkar awaits, inviting international tourists to discover its hidden gems and create unforgettable memories in the heart of Sindh.

Karachi Weather A Comedy of Errors
People say the weather in Karachi is difficult to predict. They are wrong! It's almost impossible to predict using any weather forecasting algorithm. That is because there are two factors influencing the amount of rainfall in both Western and Monsoon systems. One is being a coastal city; when the thundercloud system moves over the sea, it gathers much more water (mostly 3x to 4x times) than it is actually carrying, resulting in urban flooding. Secondly, the mountains of Hub and Sakran en route of western winds change or divert the track of winds on which clouds are flying through. One more factor that detracts from most systems is the anticyclones in the Arabian Sea.

Now, coming to recent developments, due to the Polar Vortex split that occurred on 18th February 2024, many cyclonic disturbances were generated due to the heat in the southern ocean. This brings late western disturbances to many regions of Pakistan, covering the dry mountains with snow and causing flash floods in the coastal areas of Balochistan. On 1st March 2024, one more strong western disturbance is expected to affect coastal areas of Balochistan and Sindh, including Karachi. According to the predicted track, this system will enter the Arabian Sea from Sumiyani Beach, where charged clouds will suck enough water to shower at least 50 mm of rain in different parts of Karachi. Bahria Town, Gadap, Maymar, Scheme 33, and adjoining areas might enjoy hailstorm while Gulshan e Iqbal and Gulistan e Johar will receive good rain. North Karachi and North Nazimabad will bear the burden of urban flooding due to rainwater drain, while DHA, Clifton, Landhi, Korangi, and old city areas will get pleasant rain. But there remains a risk of natural disasters such as earthquakes, creek water flooding in residential areas, or even earthquakes or tsunamis in Ibrahim Hyderi, Korangi crossing, and Phase 8 DHA. So, avoid using Khayaban e Ittehad and Korangi crossing road.

However, the western side of Karachi, including Keamari, SITE Area, Baldia, and Jamshed Town, will receive heavy to moderate rainfall during the daytime.

In the mystical realms of musical history, the soul-stirring melody of Qawwali emerges as a radiant gem, echoing through the corridors of time. Born in the 13th century on the canvas of the Indian subcontinent, Qawwali is a testament to the harmonious confluence of art and spirituality. Its roots delve deep into the rich soil of the same source that nurtured the Khayal Gharana of Hindustani classical music, creating a musical lineage that transcends earthly boundaries.

Imagine the era of the 13th century, a time when the resonance of Islamic invasions sculpted the cultural landscape. It is within this vibrant tapestry that Qawwali found its rhythm, a divine composition fusing the essence of Sufi mysticism with the intricate threads of musical expression. The very heartbeat of Qawwali pulsates with the spiritual fervor inherited from the four Tarriqas of Sufi musical heritage, each contributing its unique cadence to this symphony of the soul.

As the qawwals, the custodians of this sacred tradition, engage in a spiritual dialogue through music, they transport the listener to a realm where time seems to stand still. The mesmerizing melodies, adorned with poetic verses, become a vessel for divine communication. Qawwali, with its roots intertwined in the spiritual soil of Sufism, beckons the hearts of those who seek a transcendent experience through the divine language of music. It is a musical journey that transcends borders, bridging cultures, and resonating with the eternal echoes of the Sufi mystics who once breathed life into this captivating art form.
