When Napoleon Bonaparte retreated from Moscow, Tsar Alexander I signed a manifest on 25 December 1812 declaring his intention to build a cathedral in honor of Christ the Savior "to signify Our gratitude to Divine Providence for saving Russia from the doom that overshadowed Her" and as a memorial to the sacrifices of the Russian people.

The current church is the second to stand on this site. With an overall height of 103 metres (338 ft), it is the tallest Orthodox Christian church in the world. The original church, built during the 19th century, took more than 40 years to build. It was destroyed in 1931 during the Communist rule of Joseph Stalin. The demolition was supposed to make way for a colossal Palace of the Soviets that was never built, so the church was reconstructed in the 1990s on the same site.

When Peter the Great has been elaborating Moscow’s reconstruction programme, he resorted to Jacob Bruce's help. It was used to believe that Russian statesman and military leader Jacob Bruce was a sorcerer and practitioner of black magic. It was he who divided Moscow into twelve sectors according to signs of the Zodiac.

He believed that Witch hill where the Kremlin is situated is the center of Moscow.

Many years later, when Stalin was planning Moscow Metro’s construction, he used Yakov Brus’s scheme:

Kurskaya station - Aries

Taganskaya station – Ta**us

Paveletskaya station – Gemini

Dobrininskaya station – Cancer

Oktyabr’skaya station – Leo

Park Kultury station – Virgo

Kievskaya station – Libra

Krasnopresnenskaya station – Scorpio

Belorusskaya station – Sagittarius

Novoslobodskaya station – Capricorn

Prospekt Mira station – Aquarius

Komsomol’skaya station - Pisces

It is used to believe that every month in Moscow metro you can see midnight old train. It stops on every station, but never opens the doors. But even if the doors are open, the one who steps in, will never come back again. Train driver is dressed in soviet uniform and the passengers - in grey antique clothes.

One of the existing versions is that this is a train with the souls of those who died in the times of metro construction.

Josephine ghost

Did you know that one of the most exotic Moscow ghosts refers to the Kuznetsky most street?

As per legend, since year 1905 passersby have usually met mystical Frenchwoman on their way. As recently as half a century ago city gossipers were sure it was Josephine – modiste from France, who kept art patron’s, Savva Morozov, company. After his mysterious death in Cannes (May, 1905) newsboys called out the headlines “Savva Morozov has died by his own hand”. Excited Josephine ran out from the 21st house to buy a newspaper and died beneath the wheels of passing by wagon.

The next night one of the newspaper sellers was found strangled by woman stocking, which was identified by the police as Josephine’s piece of clothing.

In the course of a month three more journalists were killed in the same way.

A set of strange circumstances still make the historians argue. Moreover, it is believed that the Josephine ghost still dwells there.
