βš“β›ͺπŸ€΄πŸ»β˜¦οΈπŸ°πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί On a day like today, May 18th, but in 1704, on Kotlin Island, Peter I founded a walled city, the port city of Kronstadt located in the Gulf of Finland, 71 kilometers far from Saint Petersburg.
To implement the idea of Russia's outlet to the sea and the protection of the Neva Bay and of St. Petersburg from Swedish ships, Peter I decided to construct a fortress near the future capital. The emperor immediately appreciated the enormous strategic importance of Kotlin Island. In 1703, after the departure of the Swedish squadron to Vyborg to spend there the winter, Peter I began building a fortress on the island.
Model of the fortress was made by the emperor, and the construction was entrusted to Alexander Menshikov. By the end of 1704, a wooden three-storey tower with earthen mounds was built in the shallows near Kotlin. Wooden logs, filled with stones, which lowered into the water served as the foundation for its walls. The new fortress was armed with 14 guns, and to better protect the passage, a battery numbering 60 guns was built on the island itself.
During the Northern War of 1700-1721, the fortress repeatedly repulsed the attacks of the fleet of Sweden, and in 1720s it became the main base of the Baltic Fleet.
During the Great Patriotic War (Second World War), Kronstadt played a crucial role in the defense of Leningrad (Saint Petersburg). The heroic inhabitants of the island did not allow the N***s to invade Leningrad from the Gulf of Finland.
Kronstadt has more than 300 historical and cultural monuments; one of the most impressive is the Naval Cathedral. The town is included in the UNESCO Heritage list.

On a day like yesterday, April 20, but in 1870, the Tobolsk Museum-Reserve -one of the oldest museums in Siberia- was established. Tobolsk is located 2,816 kilometers far from Saint Petersburg and 2,389 from Moscow.
Originally, the museum was a branch of the Provincial Statistical Committee. It was not only a repository of antiquities and relics but also a scientific institution, which foundation laid the grounds of such disciplines as archeology and ethnography.
The contemporary history of the Tobolsk Museum-Reserve was launched in 2007, in a period of new development. It happened due to a radical change in the exhibition's concept, focused on the maximum use of resources. A lot of work was done on museumification and development of the tourism industry by the creation of a tourist center based on the historical and architectural heritage of Tobolsk and with the financial support of the Government of Tyumen Region.
Nowadays the museum complex currently consists of 11 museum institutions (that includes the Kremlin, the prison, etc.). It includes 55 objects and about 450,000 museum objects in the collections.
As a part of the museum complex in 2018 was established the first museum in Russia, dedicated entirely to Emperor Nicholas II and his family. It is located in the former governor’s mansion where the emperor Nicholas II and his family were held under house-arrest between August 1917 and April 1918.
The most valuable are collections of ethnography, archeology, paleontology, manuscripts, and early printed books, handicrafts (including art bone carving), a photo collection, and items of the Romanov family.

πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸ¦±πŸ’8th March - International Women's Day - Russian celebrations
Yesterday in Russia we celebrated an official public holiday because of Women’s Day.
The International Women's Day emerged as a political celebration to symbolize the fight of women from all over the world for their rights, full equality with men, democracy and peace.
Men and women give flowers, postcards with poetry, chocolate, and other pleasant gifts to their mothers, wives, grandmothers, sisters and daughters.
In companies and organizations, all women receive flowers and small memorable gifts from their male co-workers and, sometimes, from employers themselves. During the lunch break, it is common to have a small office party with cake and a glass of champagne.
Images of flowers and portraits of famous Russian painters of the 19th-20th centuries were projected on the facades of several buildings in St Petersburg.
Saint Petersburg police and traffic officers gave flowers to women on the streets of the city.

Last week in Russia we had enjoyed the traditional Maslenitsa.
Maslenitsa is used to be celebrated a week before the Great Lent starts and lasts for seven days.
This year, it takes place from February 20 to 26. This auspicious occasion of indulgence, better known as Butter Week, is a folk holiday observed in Slavic countries.
The holiday honors the arrival of Spring after the long stretch of winter. Being the oldest Slavic holiday, Maslenitsa Week continues to bring observers together for a feast of pancakes, butter-filled sweets (blinis) and religious merriment.
Maslenitsa Week celebrations are broken down into seven days, with each one dedicated to unique activities. The festival begins with a common evening feast on day one. On the second day, Russians partake in snow sledding and elders of the households take a walk in the snow. The third day is reserved for preparing a sweet meal, followed by cross-country skiing on the fourth day. The fifth-day honors mothers and mothers-in-law, and the final two days of the week mark the end of winter with snow sports and the burning of Maslenitsa effigy. Maslenitsa Week celebrations take from both Pagan and Christian traditions.
The days of the week often end with folk dances in community gardens.

Today, February 28th marks the end of winter.
Russia seams to be different from the rest of the world in some aspects: the meteorological calendar defines each season as consisting of three months: winter lasts from Dec. 1 to Feb. 28, spring starts on March 1 and lasts until April 30 and so on. This approach is simply more convenient for record-keeping purposes and is based on recorded history: statistically, in the Northern hemisphere, the months from December to February are the coldest.
And to β€œsay good bye” to the coldest season of the year, we have selected some of the most beautiful pictures published by the Peterhof Palace Museum of Saint Petersburg to share with all of you. We hope you will really enjoy them.

On a day like today February 24th, but in 1903, in the premises of the railway station Borodino took place a grand opening of the Museum-Reserve "Borodino Field" - the memorial of two Patriotic Wars, the oldest museum in the world created on battlefields.
Back in 1812 Mikhail Kutuzov urged to preserved field fortifications made by the Russian army.
At the Semenov fleches, where was killed Brigadier General Alexander Tuchkov 4th, his wife Margaret M. Tuchkov decided to build a temple.
In 1838, the Holy Monastery of Borodino was approved. In 1839, in the center of the Russian position, at the battery of Raevsky, was erected the main monument, depicting the military glory of Russia. Here were reburied the remains of the Borodino’s hero, Infantry General Pyotr Bagration, the commander of the 2nd Western army, mortally wounded on the day of the battle. In 1912, the centenary of the Battle of Borodino, 34 more monuments were built and Russian fortifications restored: Maslovsky flushes, Shevardinsky redoubt and southern (left) Bagration fleche. Command posts of Kutuzov and Napoleon were marked with special monuments.
At the beginning of the 20th century, due to the approaching centenary of the Patriotic War, the work on the museum continued.
In 1912, in the middle of the field, on the site of the lodge was constructed a building designed by architect Vladimir Voeykov, which up to now housed the museum. Later there were transferred the exhibits previously held at the railway station of Borodino, in the Holy Monastery of Borodino, the Imperial Palace, which was built in the village of Borodino in 1839 and which burnt down in 1942. In 1962, in time to the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino, the museum’s building was increased - three halls were attached to it.
In front of the Museum-Preserve "Borodino Field" are set Napoleon's army guns taken as trophies in 1812; as well as busts and sculpted portraits of famous military leaders, commanders of armies in 1812 - Mikhail Kutuzov, Pyotr Bagration and M. Barclay de Tolly.
Museum exhibition is presented chronologically. First, visitors see the exhibits that reveal a liberation nature of the war of 1812 and the actions of the two armies before the Battle of Borodino; then they proceed to the central rooms devoted to the Battle of Borodino, and at the end, there are the materials on the victory of the Russian army in 1812 and the defeat of the N***s near Moscow in 1941-1942.
In 2002, the 190th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino at the museum opened a new major exhibition "Borodino - Battle of the Giants." On the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino was recreated the imperial estate in the village of Borodino and this tradition is repeated every year (https://www.facebook.com/nordictravelrussia/posts/pfbid02KKB3mEYoBfG788FaCJUX4DKRKcrL5aMA2D9Q2TagxjZMeGgXd6ckt4CTy8aUHXA5l ).
In 2007, the Museum "Borodino Field" was the first Russian museum to be awarded the International UNESCO Prize n. a. Melina Mercouri for the Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes.

On a day like today, February 17, but in 1852 took place a grand opening of the New Hermitage, the first public art museum in Russia. For the first time in the national history there was constructed a special building for preservation and display of the exhibits.
The relative date when the Hermitage collections started to be built is the year of 1764 when the empress Catherine II acquired 255 pictures mostly of the Dutch and Flemish schools. Up to the middle of the 19th century these collections could be accessed only by a limited circle.
Following the example of European states, Nicholas I decided to create a new museum, accessible for public. Its building, constructed from 1840 to 1851 according to the design of a Bavarian architect Leo von Klenze, was named the New Hermitage. It adjoined the buildings of Grand and Small Hermitage.
Klenze, master of museum ensemble, scientist, archaeologist, painter, developed a project of the museum based on the experience of European museum building of XIX century. According to the project, the first floor was designed to accommodate antique collections, ancient and modern sculptures, the exhibition of drawings and engravings, as well as libraries. Designing the first floor halls Klenze used the techniques of ancient architecture: granite and marble colonnades, ornamental painting. Second-floor halls were assigned for display of paintings and decorative arts.

It is situated in the Yuzhno-Kurilsky District of Sakhalin Oblast. The territory of the nature reserve comprises three areas: two of them are on Kunashir Island, the third one is on the Dyomina Islands and the Oskolki Islands.
The area of the nature reserve is around 660 square kilometers (terrestrial: 400 square kilometers and marine: 260 square kilometers).
Kurilsky Nature Reserve is one of two nature reserves in Russia, where active volcanoes are located. Northern and southern plants can be found here: subtropical lianas hang from northern fir trees. There are archaeological and ethnographic artefacts in the reserve and its protected areas (Ainu settlements, settlements of Okhotsk people) that need protection. The reserve is home to plants and animals that can be found nowhere else.
The forests are inhabited by brown bears, foxes, hares, sables, weasels, and European minks.
Even the most sophisticated traveler will not remain indifferent when visiting the southern Kuril Islands. This is majestic volcanoes, hot springs, picturesque coast, riddled with numerous bays, coastal islands and cliffs, dotted with nests of sea birds, curious foxes, Pacific dolphins swimming in the waves, inquisitive seals watching you from the water, and of course, Pacific Ocean, mysterious and beautiful in all seasons.

On a day like today February 3rd, but in 1910 the foundation stone of the Saint Petersburg Mosque was laid to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the reign of Abdul Ahat Khan in Bukhara who donated the biggest part of money.
It is considered one of the largest mosques in Europe. It can accommodate up to 5,000 persons.
The Mosque was designed by the architect Nikolay Vasiliev with the help of the engineer S. Krichinsky and the architect A. von Gauguin.
The dome of the mosque in many ways repeats the famous dome of Gur-Emir Mausoleum in Samarkand, the shape and geometrical patterns of the entrance portal were also borrowed from of Samarkand Shahi-Zinda Mausoleum.
By the end of 1914 the main work on the interior of the building was completed but the technical equipment and decoration continued even after the revolution.
In accordance with Muslim traditions, the bulk of the structure is oriented by the altar to Mecca (South). The temple is crowned with a ribbed dome raised on a cylindrical drum. A characteristic shape of the mosque is formed by 48 meters high two minarets.
The walls of the mosque are faced with dark gray granite of rough texture, which makes building look monumentally. A unique majolica was created by P.K. Vaulin.

The origins of the very name Kuznetsk Land go back to the ancestors of modern Shors who lived in the upper reaches of the Tom, Mras-Su, and Kondoma Rivers, and who were still called kuznetsy (blacksmiths) by Siberian chroniclers for their ability to obtain iron from ore.
The Kemerovo region has significant cultural and creative resources. It is actively developing sports and health tourism. One of the most spectacular areas is Gornaya Shoriya, which is often called Siberia’s Switzerland for its natural beauty. There are many tourist centers, the largest of which being the Sheregesh alpine resort and Mount Tumannaya. The centers offer alpine skiing and snowmobile slopes, comfortable hotels and camping sites. Legend has it that it is here where the Yeti lives.
