Community Activities in Rwanda
You may involve in community activities which are available outside Volcanoes National Park. Choose to do some of the following activities that are available anytime after your Gorilla or Golden monkeys tracking and these activities are nearby your lodges:
1. VILLAGE WALK: Guided short and long walks on foot are available for guests who are interested in visiting villages near the volcanoes and taking photos. It is an amazing and very adventurous experience, as you will see how the Rwandese live in their villages and homes. The short walk on foot takes roughly 1.5 hours and the longer one takes around 2.5 hours or more, depending on guests’ preference. With the help of our local guides, guests who want to visit community members in their homes where you will get to know local traditions such as food preparation, from lighting a fire until food is completely prepared. They will see how people grind sorghum and wheat using a grinding stone. Guests may take pictures freely. The local guide is paid $ 20 /person.
2. SCENIC WALKS AND BIRD WATCHING: We assist guests who would like to walk around the vicinity of Volcanoes National Park, view the abundant, diverse birdlife of Rwanda, and get exercise in preparation for their next gorilla trekking adventure. The local guide is paid $ 20/person.
3. SCHOOL VISITS: We help guests to visit nearby schools, Nursery, primary, and secondary schools. Guests will gain an understanding of the Rwandese education system. The walk on foot takes 2 hours for both primary and secondary schools visit and 1hour for a Nursery visit, the guide is paid $10 / person.
4. A VISIT TO EX-POACHERS’COMMUNITY: We assist guests who would like to visit local communities of formerly marginalized people who lived in the forest for many years. The guests will learn more about these people’s lives in the forest through their beautiful stories, dances and songs. As these people relied on bush meat through poaching, they will also present traditional materials they were using to trap animals, which was the only source of getting food in the forest. The price for this tour is $30/person. This price includes the community charges and a local guide.
Any money you pay for the above specified walks benefits local people 60% and 40% goes to the developments of Volcanoes Opportunities Association and a token of appreciation to the staff. This walk takes about 25 minutes each way to drive and the entertainment lasts 45 minutes.
5. LOCAL HILL HIKING “MBWE” The hike starts from Rusenge centre and leads you to the top of the hill. On your hike you will have a panoramic view of beautiful volcanoes, landscapes twin lakes (Ruhondo and Burera) interactions with kids at their schools, people who are doing their daily activities like brick laying, farming to mention but a few. Estimated time for the hike is 4-6 hrs to and from each person will have to pay $30/person this walk starts at 08:00am.
6. LOCAL BEER BREWERY EXPERIENCE, with demonstration of making, you will get to know how it is made and its taste if you want and enjoy the interaction with people involved. It takes 2.5hours. Each will have to pay $30.
7.HOME STAY, Stay overnight with friendly local families, share local food with them, see lifestyle and listen to their stories and others $35 per person will be paid.
8. KINYARWANDA LESSON, Guests who would like to learn more about Rwandan culture, learn basic lesson of Kinyarwanda with local people. It takes 1.5hour $10/person.
9. COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING, for those who would like to help the community in any way are most welcome and we organize it for free.
10. BIKING IN THE VILLAGE, Enjoy the beautiful sceneries, landscapes and seeing the community members in their daily routines. You decide time according to your fitness $30/person.
10. TWIN LAKES, (Burera and Ruhondo),Enjoy a fantastic nature walk around the lake, Bird watching, Boat cruise ,fishing ,outstanding view of 5volcanoes to mention but few.
11. WEAVING EXPERIENCE, We recommend our guests to participate in this activity of basket and traditional mats weaving with women cooperatives as another way of supporting the community based tourism, the walk takes 30minutes and costs $15/person.
12. BEE KEEPING, This project is very important for income generating to the community and useful to our lives. Such as, cures a huge number of local diseases. During this walk you will get to know how honey is produced from the making of hive until harvesting fresh honey. This takes 2hours $20 will be paid per person.

13. BRICKSLAYING EXPERIENCE, Many houses in Rwandan towns are constructed by bricks. We help our guests to see how bricks are made from the mixture of pure clay soil with water until bricks are ready after they have passed under a flame in burning room $15 per person.
14. COW MILKING AND BUTTER CHURNING, Guests who would like to learn how local people milk their cows and get butter from milk are welcomed in a local family to see this amazing experience. You will get to participate in the activity while taking pictures. This walk takes 20minutes one way on foot and costs $20 per person.
