Banana beer, or “urwagwa” in Kinyarwanda, is a traditional beer made from fermentation of mashed bananas. Guests learn the step-by-step art of making traditional banana beer, from mashing bananas to grinding and toasting sorghum, to the fermentation process, which ends with a tasting! Golden monkeys trekking takes place in Volcanoes national park and at the same time 7:00 just like gorillas. These rare species are also listed as endangered – and Volcanoes national park currently has two habituated golden monkeys’ troops that are available for visiting by tourists in the park, both of which make about 80 members.

Golden monkeys in Rwanda live in the bamboo vegetation towards the base of the volcanoes and habituation has helped them to overcome their initial shyness to accept their daily visit by researchers and tourists. Trekking golden monkeys and gorillas is a similar experience – in a small group of no more than eight people, and you can spend one hour with the monkeys once you find them.

Akagera National Park today is home to the Big 5! Thanks to the long-term partnership between the African Parks and the RDB. It`s amazing!

Akagera is the only remaining refuge for savannah-adapted animals in Rwanda. Before 2010 the park was overrun by thousands of cattle and was on the verge of being lost forever due to human encroachment and poaching. In 2010, African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) entered into a long-term partnership to manage Akagera. This partnership has transformed Akagera from a depleted landscape into a safe habitat of large herds of buffalo, impala, zebra, topi, and elephants. Lions and black rhinos have both been reintroduced because of the success of this partnership. As the ecosystem has improved, the park has grown as a tourist attraction that generates revenue to benefit communities and wildlife.
