MR KELVIN YAP
Being an English Language and English Literature teacher has been an exciting journey with nary a dull moment. I have grown in tandem with each student who has walked into my life. This began in 1996 as a rookie relief teacher in Peirce Secondary School, through contract teaching in Bowen Secondary School in 1997-98, and then experiential Practicum teaching of General Paper in Nanya
ng Junior College in 1998, for which I was awarded a Distinction grade by NIE, NTU. This was followed by 4 fulfilling years in Bendemeer Secondary School as a beginning teacher and later Head (English Department), 10 tantalising years in Raffles Institution and 3 amazing years in Temasek Junior College, teaching General Paper and English Literature (H1 and H2). Among my past students are past President’s Scholars, PSC Scholars, DSA students, international students for whom English is not their first language, Sports classes, and numerous graduating classes in O Levels English Language and English Literature (with value-added results), and in General Paper (with value-added results in A/B quality grades and 100% passes). I have constantly sought to hone my pedagogy, provide customised instruction and feedback, and to be up-to-date in current assessment trends pertaining to national examinations. At the same time, I strive to inculcate a love of the English Language and to showcase its salience to all my students, so that they will become proficient and competent, not only in harnessing and utilising the authoritative power of language, but also in employing language to wield authority and influence in their daily and lifelong interactions.
