It's easy to complain about how far we still have to go in , to "catch up to the rest of the world."

While I admit there is no shortage of inconveniences: electricity outages, network servers down, payments being "lost" with no way for reimbursement, ATMs malfunctioning, water outages, flooding due to backed up and outdates evacuation systems, unbearable traffic jams due to no urban planning, no obligatory permits for nannies, real estate agents, laborers or technical professions, no regulation on company and vehicule pollution, no customer protections, no Better Business Bureau, no clear laws or guidelines for tax and compliance, archaic documentation system, aversions to technology and making administration easier, little water safety regulation, no system to ensure protection from fraud, no reliable community police or fire department, no barriers to entry to ensure private schooling quality....the list goes on...BUT....here is a little perspective to keep in mind.

Here in one person's lifetime has seen more than 5 generations of in the US, for example.

People living today in their 40s, who grew up in the 1980s just outside lived much of their life without electricity. At that time there was just over a million people in the capital. That means my driver remembers his father cleaning the lamp and adding kerosene each night so his children could study. Everyone was asleep by 8pm, because everything was PITCH BLACK. No electricity meant no microphone for prayer time either -- he remembers an elderly blind man doing "nodou" to wake everyone up at "fajr" at 5am.....and he was quiet, but everyone heard it, and everyone was awake.

We are annoyed at the "wature", or work horses pulling their load amidst rush hour traffic. Remember that there was a time in the US about a hundred years ago that slowly horses were disappeared in urban centers, due to safety concerns, increased regulations, and the automobile.

Not that long ago, Pikine, Geudjawaye, Cite Keur Gorgui, Almadies, and even Sacre Coeur did not exist....they were considered countryside. No paved roads, and not many people. The horses were the only means of transportation that could pass - and they served as taxis, trucks, and busses...

There are older people in their 60s and 70s who see the changes in technology and population booms, foreigners and connectedness to the world that must, ok some level, scare them. What they remember is a quieter, simpler time. When life was cheaper, slower, and when people took the time to NUYO.

We are seeing an absolute EXPLOSION of economic development here. Even since 2009 I barely recognize Dakar. It has been less than 10 years that Dakar has gone from a mid sized, quaint town, to a teeming international hub, on the brink of total modernity. We are witnessing a century of expansion in just a few years.

Let's soak it in, enjoy the flow, remember those last horses. And tell our children.

Be careful out there, for everyone in Dakar right now. This could be similar to what happened in March 2021.

Ce communiqué précise les conditions d'entrée au Sénégal. Les voyageurs qui embarquent vers le Sénégal présentent soit un test PCR rt négatif de moins de 05 jours s'ils ne sont pas vaccinés ; s'ils sont vaccinés ils leur suffira de présenter le certificat de vaccination.

Cependant, les voyageurs qui quittent le Sénégal pour un autre pays doivent se renseigner sur les conditions d'entrée dans ces pays qui souverainement décide des conditions et modalités à imposer au voyageyr souhaitant venir chez eux.
