Guard
Zebras are amazing. Obviously, they are strikingly good-looking with their mesmerizingly, bold stripes. They are also incredibly strong and stalwart. They are also complex social animals. Each zebra has a completely unique stripe pattern, like our fingerprints. In a herd, the moving, criss-crossing patterns confuse predators by making it difficult to focus on one animal. And they look out for each other, as this image shows.

In eastern Africa, an average of 6,250 wildebeests drown in the Mara River per year. This represents around 0.5% of the herd. Around 200,000 of the weakest wildebees and zebra will die during the migration du to starvation, disease or over excursion - outsid e of predation. This is, however, advantageous for other animals in the ecosystem including buzzards, lions, cheetahs, crocodiles, and other foot adventure

FACTS
GREY HERON (Ardea Cinera)

1. When they are in breeding season, the colour of the grey heron’s bill changes from yellow to a brighter orange, and its legs go from a yellow-brown to a rosier shade of pink.

2. They are known for their ability to stand absolutely still for extended periods of time, even hours, as they wait for prey.

3. They primarily consume fish, but will also eat amphibians, crustaceans, small birds, mammals, worms, lizards and some insects.

4. They are monogamous birds that will likely stick to an established heron nesting area, set up by previous generations in their natural habitat. These are called heronries.

5. Their average lifespan is about five years, though there have been reports of wild birds living four times longer than this.

6. Male grey herons are picky about their mates. They'll reject a female that they don't fancy.

7. They have a wingspan of about 155-195 cm and when in flight, they have their head pulled back towards their body.

8. Their sixth vertebrae is elongated and this makes their neck extend further than that of other birds.

04/07/2023

Ruminants, like antelope, all sheep, bison, giraffe (there's about 200 of them) -- those 'chewers', are the most successful of the large grass-eaters.
A ruminant's stomach is divided into sections called chambers.
- The first chamber receives the mouthfuls of half-chewed grass -- this chamber is called the 'rumen'.
- After several hours, the mash of half-digested vegetation is separated into lumps and one after another of these lumps are sent back, aided a muscular pouch alongside the rumen, and up the t uphroat they travel to be happily and contentedly chewed longer, grinded by those molars. And this process is called 'chewing the cud'.
- Once well-chewed, down it goes, by-passing the first two chambers and arriving into the third chamber. And this is the true part of its stomach. After further digestion from its stomach juices, finally the vegetation's nutrients are absorbed through the stomach wall.

LIONS 🦁 FACTS
1. The darker a male lion’s mane is, the older he is.

2. They can see six times better in the dark than a human. At night, a reflective coating on the back of their eyes helps capture moonlight. Additionally, they have a white patch of fur underneath their eyes that helps to reflect even more light.

3. Male lions may mate up to 100 times in two days to ensure that the female is pregnant. Each mating lasts only a few seconds. Female lions are pregnant with their cubs for about 3½-4 months.

4. Their pupils are three times as big as a human’s. But a lion can’t move its eyes side to side very well, so it moves its entire head when it needs to look in a different direction.

5. At the base of each lion’s whisker is a black spot. The patterns these spots make are unique to each lion, similar to a human’s fingerprint.

Warthog (Phacochoerus Africanus )

1. Their name comes from their ‘warts’ or protrusions on the sides of their face, these protrusions are a combination of bone and cartilage. It protects their face when they fight.

2. They sleep underground at night in burrows that they steal from other animals such as aardvark. They don’t dig their own.

3. They mainly eat grass or will dig for roots and bulbs when it’s dry. If they have the opportunity, they will scavenge on meat as they are omnivorous.

4. They like to roll in the mud to protect their skin from the sun and from parasites.

5. Surprisingly, they can live for up to 17 years of age.

All rhino calves are born with no horns.
At 1-2 months, the African rhino's front horn starts to appear, but is just a little thing, and the back horn begins to grow at 3 months. At 12 months, the front horn might show a curve, but the back horn is still small.
* The horn grows quickly within their first year, and after that slows down but never stops growing.

An elephant’s front feet are roughly circular, with five blunt toenails whereas the hind feet are oval and have four blunt toenails. The front feet are larger than the back feet since the front feet support the very heavy head and tusks of the elephant. The speed at which an elephant is moving can be accurately gauged by the relative positions of the front and back spoor. When moving at a leisurely pace the back track falls behind the front. As the animal picks up speed the gap between the front and rear tracks closes; when moving at top speed the rear track actually overtakes the front and the toes scuff the ground. Elephants are in fact walking on tip-toe on a cushioned pad (sole) made up of elastic like tissue. This allows elephants to move amazingly silently for such a large animal.
