When people use the terms ‘super-tusker” “big tusker” or even “tusker”, they are almost inevitably referring to male elephants. But, some females, like this matriarch, have enormously long tusks, too. Although the genetics of tusk shape and size is still largely a mystery, we do know that males and females inherit characteristics of their mother’s tusks shape and size. We know less about inheritance of their father’s tusks, as we don’t often know paternity. But where we do, we have seen some striking resemblances.

Recently, a community camera trap in the Ruaha landscape captured footage of a spotted hyaena with a sheep carcass. The sheep belonged to Daudi, a Community Camera Trapping+
Officer from the area, who sadly confirmed it was his. The attack was likely due to the vulnerability of his traditional livestock enclosure, located near the camera site. Though it was a difficult experience, it has inspired him to consider building a more secure livestock enclosure to prevent future attacks.

Our CCT+ programme has been instrumental in improving tolerance and changing attitudes towards carnivores. In the past, pastoralists might have retaliated against such attacks, but the benefits provided through CCT+ help support communities living alongside wildlife. This initiative fosters coexistence, creating a landscape where both people and carnivores can thrive.

BIRTH OF SWAHILI

By 1200 AD, over 35 Swahili city states had emerged, and spanned the Eastern coast of Africa, from Somalia, to Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique, and the islands of Comoros. This area was known to the Arabs as Bilad al Zanj, to the Persians as Zanjibar, and the Chinese as Tsengtan, all meaning 'the land of the black people'. The people would be called 'Swahili' from the Arabic word 'Sawahil' meaning 'people of the coasts'. The name would also be used to name the area as the Swahili coast, and the language as Swahili. The Swahili language emerged in around 600 AD, as a trading language, and has thereby borrowed heavily from Persian, Arabic and Hindi in addition to the bantu languages that form the proto Swahili language.
