Nearly all Kilimanjaro routes enter this zone on the second day of the itinerary and stay for 1-2 days. Here are some tips on how to best handle the heath/moorland zone on Mount Kilimanjaro:

Block the Wind – Transitioning from the dense, humid rainforest zone to the open, airy heath/moorland zone means less shelter from the elements. Climbers should prepare for colder temperatures and stronger winds. A hard shell jacket will help protect against the chill.

Protect Yourself from the Sun – Similarly, the shade of the forest is gone. The higher elevation and thinner atmosphere mean UV exposure is higher. Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are essential to protect against sunburn.

Admire the Flora – Take time to appreciate the unique plant life in this zone. Some of the most amazing examples of nature’s resilience are on display.

Acclimatization – Climbers in this zone may start to feel the negative effects of altitude. Be aware of the symptoms of acute mountain sickness and stay on top of our acclimatization guidelines.

Mount Kilimanjaro was first climbed in 1889 by German geologist Hans Meyer, an Austrian climber Ludwig Purtscheller, and a local guide Yohani Kinyala Lauwo.

On Meyer’s first attempt in 1887, he made it to the base of Kibo but had to turn around there. He encountered thick snow and ice walls and did not have equipment for heavy snow and ice.

He made a second attempt in 1888 that was also unsuccessful. But it was not due to the mountain itself, but because Meyer was captured and held as a prisoner by locals as part of the Abushiri Revolt when the Arab and Swahili population rebelled against German traders. He was freed after a ransom was paid.

Meyer finally succeeded in 1889. His support team included a guide, two local tribe leaders, nine porters, and a cook. They reached the summit on the southern rim of the crater. The Marangu route closely follows Meyer’s groundbreaking path up and down Kilimanjaro.

It is estimated that 650-810 children are born with heart defects in Zanzibar each year, with 20-25% suffering from critical neonatal heart defects that require treatment within 1-4 weeks of life to survive.

Young divers at Forodhani helped raise awareness and support for impactful tourism activities aimed at assisting children with heart defects in Zanzibar.

This week, we had the great honor of welcoming Dr. William Novick, a Professor of Surgery and International Child Health at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He is also the Founder of the Global Cardiac Alliance (GCA) in the USA and has spent 33 years helping children with heart defects in low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Novick has worked in over 36 countries, helping to build children's heart treatment services.

In Zanzibar, tourism makes up more than 27% of the island's economy and provides 80% of its foreign income, according to the Office of the Chief Government Statistician.

We hope to use tourism and other investments to support long-term children's heart care in Zanzibar. Every year, around 650-810 children are born with heart defects on the island. Of these, 20-25% have severe heart defects that need treatment within 1-4 weeks of life, or they may not survive.

Today, we were honoured to welcome Prof. William Novick from the USA to Zanzibar.

The sunset at Cape Town Fish Market painted the skies beautifully, adding a special touch to his visit.

His profession and passion for treating children with heart defects are what brought him here.

This weekend in Zanzibar has been amazing with him.

Let’s kick off the new week with fresh energy.
