Few places on the equator have glaciers. In Africa only on Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Ruwenzori in Uganda and Mount Kenya in Kenya have those large vertical ice margins. The four most famous glaciers on Mount Kilimanjaro are Furtwanger, Arrow, Credner and Rebmann.
2. Kibo is just one of the summits:
The most famous summit on Kilimanjaro is Kibo ( for good reasons, it is the highest summit and doesn’t require technical skills to reach it). Kibo is what you see in this photo. But there are two more, Shila and Mawenzi. Few people climb Mawenzi, as it requires technical climbing skills.
3. Altitude sickness is your worst enemy on Kilimanjaro
Most people who fail to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro suffer from altitude sickness so they have to be taken down. To maximize your chance of success: Do your homework when it comes to physical preparations for the climb, and choose a long climbing route such as Lemosho or Machame.
4. Minimum and Maximum age for climbing Kilimanjaro
Hey, there’s no maximum age for climbing Kilimanjaro. However, careful health considerations need to be taken into consideration. We’ve a record of a 89 years old woman who successfully reached the summit of Kibo. With kids, the minimum allowed age is 10, however sometimes authorities grant special permissions for kids less than 10 years old to climb.

Everest is in mountain range, but Kilimanjaro stands on its own. That’s why you hear the saying: “Kilimanjaro is the world’s tallest free standing mountain”.
