Expect food which is tasty and plentiful, using local ingredients as much as possible. That's how you close a meeting Itambira style!

Celebrations and dancing marked the end of our Food Security & Nutrition training course for a group of local mums and some of their children.

This popular course teaches important principles as well as providing tips and techniques for feeding the family.

Itambira Island Seeds of Hope uses profit from tourism to help benefit the local community in a number of areas, including a variety of training courses.

Wonderful news of a new addition!

Meet the world’s newest baby mountain gorilla 🦍 born in the Bikingi Mountain Gorilla Family.

We are glad to share with you this first mobile image from our field team in Rushaga - Bwindi Impenetrable NP, Uganda

The baby was born to Adult Female Mucecuru who is a member of the Bikingi gorilla group, famously known for the Gorilla Habituation Experience. The baby was first seen yesterday but is expected to have been born on the night of Friday, 2nd February 2024.

This new birth brings the total number of mountain gorillas in the family to 09 (nine) individuals. We congratulate Silverback Kaharata (the dad) and Mucecuru (the mom) as well as the whole Bikingi family on this great news. We wish the baby a long and happy life.

𝟭𝟲 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲!

Last October, we were pleased to announce we’d delivered 48 water tanks. We set a target for 50 by Christmas. Thanks to our Christmas Gifts campaign and kind donations, that target has been absolutely smashed! We were thrilled to receive funds to enable us to build 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟲 water tanks for local communities, taking our total to 𝟲𝟰 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 - each of which is delivered together with a day of training about sanitation and hygiene.

This is so gratefully received by the recipients. It saves the steep daily climb to the lake, thereby enabling more productive activities adjacent to the home, as well as delivering enormous benefits to hygiene and health.

How wonderful to see our Ugandan gorilla population expanding!

Happy new week! Here is the first image by our field team of Uganda’s newest addition in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Adult female Mugwere of the Mukiza gorilla family gave birth to a healthy baby yesterday. The group now has 28 individuals.

Thanks to generous donations, there are now 5 more water tanks for communities local to Lake Bunyonyi. The Buhumba and Kakooko water tanks enable more families to access convenient water storage. It means that rains can be harvested so that people spend less time spent fetching water from the lake, which is heavy work on steep and rough paths.

These families are so grateful to have received a water tank. We’re delighted to pass on their thanks to those who have kindly donated to this project.

Wow look at the figures - well done Uganda Wildlife Authority - this is such great news!

During the last 25 years, we’ve also registered an increase of wildlife populations for most animal species. Rhinos for instance that had been declared extinct in Uganda as of 1995 were re-introduced and are now thriving. 🎉

It's a mountain gorilla BABY BOOM 🦍 in Uganda. Meet the newest member of the Christmas family in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. In this photo captured by our field team yesterday (16/05/2022), adult female Kiiza is seen holding her baby so dearly!

With this new birth, the number of mountain gorillas 🦍 in the Christmas family has grown to a total of eight. Kiiza was first spotted by our daily team of trackers with her healthy baby early on Monday morning. Both mother and father are in good health too.

Kiiza is a name given to a child who is born after twins. It is heartwarming to see her bring new life to earth, and is a testimony to the excellent work done by our teams, communities, and partners in conserving these iconic species. We wish them a long and healthy life. 🦍

Delighted to share news of a new arrival in Uganda’s gorilla population!

Uganda Wildlife Authority is delighted to announce the birth of a new mountain gorilla 🦍 today January 20, 2022 in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and this is the first image of the new baby captured by our team in the wild. The baby is born to an adult female called Nyabwoba of the Christmas family in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi. Both the mother and baby are in perfect health! This new birth increases the number of individuals in the Christmas family from 6 to 7, and is an important addition to the delicate population of the few surviving mountain gorillas in the world.

Over £3,000 raised in our alternative Christmas gifts appeal!

Itambira Island Seeds of Hope have been busy distributing livestock, household items and other supplies, bringing hope and love to families around Lake Bunyonyi in SW Uganda. The gifts are already being distributed and bringing much joy!

The pictures show just some of the donations that were made through the generosity of many people, from seeds to livestock, household items to water tanks.

Itambira Island Seeds of Hope is repeating its Christmas gift campaign for a second year. The scheme enables people to ‘gift’ practical items to those living in the Bunyonyi Lake area in South West Uganda. The choice ranges from agricultural tools at just £4 to water tanks at £250. It's been a tremendous blessing to the community already and we have already had enquiries from people looking to donate again.
